Jobs on Alaska Railroad, Soo Line District
The Alaska Railroad is looking to hire five to six locomotive engineer/conductor trainees for seasonal positions for at least the first two years, while the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) said it is hiring qualified conductors and engineers in Elkhart, Ind., as part of the expansion of its Soo Line District operations.
The Alaska Railroad positions are open to all applicants, with pay starting at $17.35 an hour. Recruitment opened June 21 and will run through June 29, the carrier said. Most applicants will work on a seasonal basis (approximately May 1 - Oct 1) the first and second years, dependent on seniority position.

Meanwhile, an applicant for the Soo Line District operations must be a qualified railroad conductor to be considered for the conductor jobs, and a qualified locomotive engineer to be considered for the engineer positions. Deadlinews to apply for these positions:

i thought about going up north and joining the ARR…after i saw a show on the traval channel that showed some of the alaska railroad in action running one of the alaskan cruse passanger trains…i was ready to put my papers in at csx…and head up that way…just 2 “small” obsicals stand in my way… 1 is i HATE the cold…and i mean realy hate it…and that pesky wife wont go with me…lol

since the ratio of men to women in alaska is like 100 men for evey 1 woman…the odds are stacked aginst finding a replacement up thier…lol…

Yeah, it is that. I like the idea of Alaska myself, except I already have to freeze my A** off in the winter (funny how despite that every year it never seems to get smaller…) and I can’t imagine the kind of winters they get up there. The worst I’ve had to do so far is work in -40F temperatures with windchill to -65F. Their weather is much worse, especially up near Fairbanks…
