I would but I don’t have any place to display something. Maybe I’ll bring in one of my CP AC4400CW’s and display it at lunch time.
Is just me or does anyone else think it is no coincidence that a guy calling himself
Who’s Your Daddy
is talking about taking a model to work.
I was going to start another post on this topic but ran a search first and found this one from last year, so I’m reviving it today!
(Friday) is “Take your model train to work” day! Since we are off for Veterans Day tomorrow I brought my trains to work today.
Nothing fancy, I brought some HO scale stuff, two diesel locomotives, a Norfolk Southern GE Dash 9-44CW, and a Kansas City Southern SD45T-2, a Southern covered hopper, and a Southern bulkhead flat car. I was thinking of making a 3’ display base with roadbed and track but did not have time to put that all together, could be something to shoot for next time. My next door cube co-worker models S gauge and we talk trains most mornings; it was fun sharing and showing off my model trains.
Anyone else have model trains at work?
Cheers,
Ryan
Not bringing anything, too smart for that. It’s not going to convince anyone to conssider taking up the hobby, but it could generate train nut comments. Nothing to gain but something to possibly loose so no not me.
On the contrary! It is almost quitin’ time here at work today, and since I will be off for Vets day on Friday, I brought my stuff in today!
Take a Model Train to Work Day - Report
My cube buddy models American Flyer S gauge stuff and when I showed him my HO DCC locos he said… “What’s DCC?” So I enlightened him on the fineries of digital command control and all the possibilities with that. Decoders, stationary decoders, sound, signaling, trainsponding, PC interface, etc… We was blown away with the developments in model railroading. Now he is all pumped up about getting all his old American Flyer stuff out of the boxes and even talked about maybe going into garden trains. He’s an avid gardener too.
Then my boss comes by my cube to see all the trains. She knew to expect them because I told her all about the train show from this past weekend and I had already mentioned to her about it being “bring your train to work day”. She said… “You make too much money to afford that kind of hobby.” Of course she was just kidding, her husband collects antiques. She then told me that her brother is an engineer for a railroad in , so I learned something new about her today.
Then my boss tells another guy who works in our building about my hobby. Turns out he was at the train show too this past weekend. His disabled son wants to model HO and he is starting out with a 4’ X 8’ and we talked trains for over a half hour. I offered my help anytime he needed it to get his son started in the hobby.
Then another co-worker stops by my cube and asked about the trains. Turns out she used to work in a train shop in
I get to take some trains to school…Just think of all the comments that’ll bring about. [:P]
I’m bringing my N scale PRR Sharks to school; I’ve got a friend I’ve been working to bring about to the light of model railroading…So maybe this’ll spark his interest a bit more.
Kids in my scchool think it is cool to work with models and microcontrollers ( decoders ), haha, an excuse to check ebay, as we are working w/ microcontrolllers right now in tech. Always on ebay during tech class.
This has been going on for years. How many of you also know that November is National Model Railroad month?

A few years ago I took a toy train set box car that came decorated for the company I worked for, replaced the horn-hooks with rusted-up Kadee K’s (not a typo!) and gave it a mild weathering. Mounted it on a Life-Like straight section with cleaned up ends (screw up from the bottom into the car’s underframe.) Gave it to my boss, who wasn’t a model railroader but WAS a TRU blue company man.
The train set? It had been damaged in shipment. I rescued the car from a one-way trip to the dumpster. That and a few sections of track were the only things worth salvaging.
