"Take the High Ground" movie

ALL:

This 1953 movie was shot at Fort Bliss (El Paso), Texas. There are nice close up shots of an SP steam locomotive and SP chair cars.

I assume that Fort Bliss had or has a balloon track to turn the train.

Any information is appreciated.

Ed Burns

Happily retired NP-BN-BNSF from Minneapolis

They used to have a wye, eons ago, for troop trains. I love that movie “…but you people, you are NOT going to make it!” [:(!]

Looked at USGS Maps of Fort Bliss

!941 and 1945 15 min series maps have two Wyes.

1948 7.5 min series has three wyes.

Thjanks for the posting

Just watched that “High Ground” clip. Did you know Richard Widmark never served a day in the military? Shows you just what a good actor his was! Like all good military men, he doesn’t just wear that uniform, he BELIEVES in it!

Speaking of uniforms, I’ve got a question. Does anyone know what that gold wreath on the cuff of Widmark’s right sleeve signifies? I’m pretty knowledgable about American uniforms, insignia and awards but I’m drawing a blank on that one.

I don’t know but I believe, I’ll be home by Christmas Eve, (Sound off) One two, (Sound off) Three four, (Sound off) One two three four, one two-oo, three four!

So THAT’S what it is! Thank you wanswheel! I’ve seen it on-and-off for the past 30-odd years on uniforms sold at gun and militaria shows and always wondered, it’s not a very common award.

I’m assuming it’s obsolete now, I’ve never seen any US Army Class A’s with it after the late '50s brown to green uniform change.

I’d respond to your “I don’t know…” with a Marine Corps version, but I’d get the thread locked and myself banished for life!

Just noticed that the locomotive did not have SP’s Train Indicators applied???
