It is finally time to oil my Proto 2000 E-7. Pulled the shell and was stunned at what I saw. This thing could be a Armour Personal Carrier! Could not see a hint of the motor, flywheel or drive shaft. Nothing but speakers and PC board, decoder (QSI) and decoder.
So how is the best way to tackle this project? I would think I could pull the motor wires and with luck pull the Armour Plating and Decoder board in one piece, could I be that lucky?
I did pry up the truck bottoms up and got some lube inside, they looked pretty dry. Hopefully that will take care of the sound i was hearing.
Ah, those P2k E units. I tore apart mine last spring to fix an electrical pickup problem. Like you I was intimated by that mass of metal when I got the shell off… so much so that I sat the unit aside for some time before tackling it. I’ll try to recall all the steps I performed.
Unplug the mini-connectors from the decoder board. There are at least 4: lights, volume pot, speakers and motor/power.
Rremove the 4 screws for the decoder board, then lift the board off and set aside.
Remove 4 screws holding each square speaker bracket. Lift off brackets, speakers and O-rings beneath. Speakers are wired together.
On my unit, the truck pickup wires run to little “bus bars” on each side of decoder. Pull off the little black plastic boots and carefully detach the 4 truck wires.
There are 4 long screws (2 beneath each speaker) holding the large metal weight in place. Remove these screws. You should now be able to lift off the large weight and access the motor and drive train.
Thank you for the answer Vampire, but the information Scuks. (with the screen name Vampire you know I had to work in the word sucks ) [:D]
It sounds like a Bloody pain, but there is a lot at Stake.OK I am done with the pun’s.
Pretty much the way I figured I just hope the screws will come lose. While the weight is off, I going to have a few oiling points cut into the side of the weight.
Thank you for your answer, I knew someone had done it before.
