Tank car question...

I recently purchased several 11,000 gallon N scale Atlas tank cars from an estate sale. Some of the cars have built dates of 1927, while others have built dates of the late 1940s and early 50s. I’ve gone through every book I have and only saw a few photos but no information or history. Could someone tell me when these types of cars first appeared and when they were taken out of service.

Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind that 8,000 gallon was very common followed by 10,000 and 11K’s as soon as the technology improved. I say that the 11K’s are in the 40’s and 50’s range.

All of the books I have seem to concentrate in that time frame.

From the Atlas on-line catalog:

Our latest high quality, ready-to-run N scale model is a true replica of American Car and Foundry’s specialized tank car designed primarily for transporting liquefied petroleum gas. Built in the 1940’s and 1950’s, these tank cars became a familiar sight on many of the railroads across the country.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the info…

I think the main diff between the 8 and 10K’s vs the 11K is the pressure vessal and perhaps insulation. (Abestoes?) and construction technology towards frameless cars.

Have a GREAT weekend!
