Tankcars in HO - what are your favorites?

I like tghe generic 10,000 - 12,000 gal. leased cars, as there seemed to be a prevalence of these cars for all different purposes in the era that I model - the '70’s.

Custom painted blue-box

While I agree in part I would check the gauge first.

And would replace the plastic wheels with metal.

I like the 17,600 Gal Corn Syrup Tank Cars by Atlas or Walthers and I like the 16,000 galion clay slurry tanks by Atlas,Athearn and Walthers.

I have had a lot of fun with Athearns newly retooled undec kits. their 8K shorties & the 22K (?) Acid Tanks.
They assemble together well, & with a little planning they paint up nice too! I also have some Atlas cars I have not started, the 30K whales, should be neat.
A couple Precision Scale plastic HOn3 kits may be on the table some time too, they look neat in kit form.

Good Thread, & thanks for sharing!

This is an old shot (2-3 years ago) & less advanced modelling efforts too.

Atlas SHIPPERS CAR LINE 33,000 Gallon LPG Tank Car

I’ve been meaning to get more tankers on the rails. These are pretty much as they come from the train shows and yard sales.

Some need Kadee couplers. All could use some grabs and brake rigging. Others may get new paint and decals. The Shell tanker may get repainted. Previous owner painted the domes and they look shabbier in real life than they do here in a photograph. This is an Athearn car. Being 6 inches long, the completed car ought to weigh 4 ounces. I have to add about an ounce to stock Athearn tankers to achieve that.

Athearn single dome chemical tanker.

Phillips 66 is a Athearn kit I got new back before Athearn discontinued selling blue box kits. That’s factory paint and pretty much box stock, no add on details.

Athearn single dome, Continental oil.

Bachmann. Came from a yard sale train set. I will probably repaint and decal this one. The colors are too bright and shiny, and I have my doubts about the “Exxon” name on a tank car. The company was “Esso” up thru the late 1970’s if memory serves.

Athearn, single dome chemical. I have a paper mill, so I need some chlorine deliveries.

Your text did not show in your post. This is a rather common problem with the forums.

Try clicking on the icon at the top of your page that looks like a torn piece of paper, and then repost your message. That usually resolves any compatibility issues with your computer and the MRR forums.

I need to get to more garage sales! You know that might even be something I can do with the wife ; )

I model the Western Maryland so, naturally, I have a lot more hoppers than tanks but I do have some for my paper mill and LPG dealer. My favorite tanks are the Atlas 11,000 gallon and Tichy & Red Caboose 10,000 gallon ones. I really enjoy assembling the RC & Tichy cars as they fit together well and are very well engineered. I have several old Varney, AHM & Tyco cars that have been redetailed and look pretty good too. Roger Huber
