Tax bill includes funding for LA subway projects
My day just brightened. I live 2,000 mi. from LA, but I expected to find comments here to the tune of, “Why should my federal tax dollars fund local and regional mass transit?” I see it another way: transit is an essential part of a modern city’s infrastructure. If my tax dollars can improve transit in LA and other cities and get more cars off the roads, that’s a win for all of us. I’d much rather see my taxes spent this way than on many other things I could mention. What other systems benefit from this?
A subway along Wilshire Blvd. alongside the La Brea Tar Pits was proposed some 50 years ago when I was getting degrees in geology from Occidental College and UCLA. They were surprised when their studies showed unstable tar sands had to be dealt with. The project died on the vine as a result. I suspect the the same unstable sands will still need to be dealt with, but if you can throw enough money at the problem you can probably solve it.
