Should reinstall the right of way through the Lake St. grade depression!
Why would the people oppose a trail next to an LRT line. Charlotte built a trail with the LRT and the trail is now a major and popular recreation trail. The trail and rail line have a fence in between each other and the city is now and sometimes you don’t even notice the trains because they are so quiet. Because it is so popular Charlotte is developing a system of pocket parks along the trail. The noise complaint I don’t get either, currently they have freight trains which would be replaced with LRT trains, LRT is 10x quieter. Either way, I’m not from Minnesota but just my $.02 on this issue.
What they should’ve mentioned in this article (mentioned in another recent Trains article) is that nothing will change about the TC&W line as the LRT line is now being built underground.
Get out the BIG saw. Slice out the Minnesota NIMBYs, and all of Wisconsin, and ship the dirt to Russia, Progressives included. Nort’ Dakota is eating their lunch! Dat’s de troot! Time to give up Communism in MN & WI!
If right-o-ways exist whether they have rails or not, use them. That would save money as well as homes and businesses.
The plan now is to tunnel the light rail through the Kenilworth corridor and leave the TC&W as is. Evidently people don’t like to see trains. Oh well.
Scrap the Light Rail plan and convert it to a Commuter rail line like the North Star line, TC&W even supported that idea a few years ago, A commuter line would have a price tag about 1/3 the cost of light rail.
Pretty much sums up the myriad of opposition to the light rail line and the relocation of the TC&W route. Nobody seems to care that the current TC&W line sees many trains everyday. Not sure why the addition of light rail to that corridor is such a big deal. Building a tunnel underneath the corridor is a major cost hurdle. I can imagine that rerouting the TC&W onto the MN&S (now Canadian Pacific) line would anger the residents of St. Louis Park, Edina, Bloomington, etc. I believe that line currently sees only about 1 train per day. The line runs about a half mile from my home in Edina.
Al, I believe that alternative has already been discussed but the powers that be decided to go with the Kenilworth corridor. I’d have to agree with you there though. Running the LRT through uptown would be a huge boon to that neighborhood.
