Tech 2 vs Tech 6

I have a couple of DC Atlas RS3’s from about 5 yrs ago. At the time I was running them with my old tech 2. They made a grinding type noise that I thought was gears so I changed them but they still made the noise. None of my other loco’s did this. I just let them sit and was going to get rid of them when I recently bought a tech 6 sound controller to run some sound locos. When I put the RS3’s on with the tech 6 they ran smooth with no grinding sound. I also notice that my proto 1000 RS2’s run much smoother too. Can anyone explain to me why the 6 would make my DC locos run better? thanks Bruce

Bruce,I think the answer lays in"Smooth linear motor control in either mode"…I’m not sure what that means exactly but,its a winner.

I’m guessing PWM used by the Tech 6 vs old-style 60hz pulse injection used by the Tech 2. I had a Tech 2 many years ago, when they were fairly new, and none of the locos I ran made any funny noises, but they were mostly bachmann N scale locos at the time.
