I’m looking for something to power my 4x6 layout. I thought about a MRC Tech 4 or some kind of DCC system. What are your thoughts about the Tech 4, and what kind of DCC system would be best for a small layout like mine?

If you have only one or two engines, you don’t need DCC for a layout that small. The biggest advantage of DCC is the ability to run multiple trains on the same track at different speeds, or even in opposite directions, with multiple controllers and operators. Stick with cheap DC power if you are the only person using your layout and only want to run one train at a time.

Go with DCC if you want to have more than one engine on the track at any given time. DCC actually has more advantages on a small layout where you have multiple engines in close proximity than it does on a large layout where you can space things out.

I agree.

Stick with DC power and use blocks. This way you can still park a train on a siding or wherever the block may be and still operate another one. Just an idea…

Consider what you want to accomplish with your layout: Do you want to have (as much as possible) prototypical switching, multiple engines, SOUND (!), etc., or do you just want to run trains around a loop? What is your budget? What locomotives will you be using? Broadway Limited (pause for proper respect) has made sound affordable, and their engines come in sizes from a small diesel switcher to an SP AC-4 cab forward articulated. Most of the features of these engines will work on conventional DC cab control, but some features are only available with DCC, and many are easier to operate under DCC. For instance, the switch that operates the whistle (horn) and bell for DC is not yet available, so you have to jockey the direction control on your DC power pack. Atlas has announced its first offering (FM Trainmaster) with sound. The hobby is going in the direction of DCC. If you can afford it, go for it! Good luck.

Hmmm…

Well I have been leaning toward DCC, but the only reason why I don’t is because I don’t really want to install decoders. I was thinking of going with the Bachmann EZ Command.

Yep, installing decoders is my hold back, too. I don’t want to have to rework my old Athearn fleet.
