Here’s more detail that anyone could ever need about utility poles: http://www.oldgreypole.com/questions.html

Nice poles Terry. I like your paint scheme.

Terry, Many moons ago, I lived up the street from a 4 track main that had poles along the length of track. I do believe they were a dark brown, and also, they were shorter than our modern poles. Had the insulators on the cross arms, etc. I am wondering if at one time they were made dark brown, or if they just aged that way. Most of the line was taken out by a derailment back in 1973, and they never replaced them. Sadly, this old line is now a two track for that regional railroad…CSX.

I remember as a kid telephone poles being a brown or dark brown colour.

I was looking for additional telephone poles for the layout specifically the 10 to the box manufactured for Lionel. I did a Google Search and low and behold Amazon had them for sale at the cheapest price including shipping. I clicked on Amazon and it was Train Z was selling them through Amazon cheaper than Train Z was selling them on their own website. They are brand new, too. [*-)]

They are on their way to Rogers Corners, Ohio as I type this posting. [yeah]

I believe the poles began their lives dark brown - creosoted probably - and then they gradually weathered. Older ones end up gray; not-so-old but not new tend to look tan with streaks of brown running down them until 4’ - 6’ from the base. Then most remain the darker brown. You can see the same graying phenomenon on older railroad ties.
