Hi to all, I would like to know if there is a formula for adding weight to tenders. I go by the NMRA formula for rolling stock. But I have never seen anything mentioned about tenders. I also realize that oil, caol and wood would make a difference as well as the lenght of the tender. The reason I ask is some of the tenders I own seem to be on the light side I added weights just by guessing. My Bachmann 2-10-2 on 36" radious would derail the front truck on tender when backing up. any advice would help. Thanks, Truck.
I would use the same formula as for other rolling stock, if anything going just a bit heavier.
Good luck,
I had the same problem with my Bachmann GS 4’s. I added around 2 oz to the tender and they where fine after that. You will need a heaver tender if you are pulling over 20 cars as well.

I have about 30 Bachmann steam locos and about 50 steam locos total. I add weight to almost all the tenders for better tracking and backing with the long trains I pull.
Most Bachmann tenders need an extra 2-3 oz. The wires and the nature of drawbars makes this necessary. In most cases, a steam loco and tender is like a long car coupled to a short car. That combined with its position as the first car in the train requires some extra weight.

Proto 2000 0-6-0’s and 0-8-0’s are really prone to derailing while going backwards. I added weight to all mine and now the derailing issue is non existent.
Thanks for your replies. Truck.
