Seriously, these smaller tank type steamers did yeoman’s work in the places that they served. It is great to see them continue to operate. Now to go back and read the article relating to what is happening with the Gramling’s engines.

What an idiotic statement, Mr. Hays. Do you have the money to restore ex L&N 4-6-2 #152? Saddle tankers performed vital functions on the class ones as well. Due to their small size, they made great shop goats. They often rode the turntable with the bigger engine which it shoved into the assigned stall. Also a tank engine’s limited fuel and water capacities were a non- issues since both were on hand.

These tank locos are as large as can be trucked from place to place without the hassle of obtaining special permits. My daughter and I each got to operate the one which visited the Virginia Museum of Transportation recently. Great fun!
