Tennessee steam excursion collides with car

How can you not hear and see a steam engine??

I’ve always said that, at least 9/10 times, it’s the fault of the idiot who got hit.

As a professional driver,(trucker), I’ve noticed that very few people have any clue as to how fast anything is approaching them. If they did, they wouldn’t be so quick to pull out in front of it and expose themselves to the grim reaper…The education process for drivers seems to come to a screeching halt just as soon as they get their license. And does not start up again until they end up in a hospital…if they live…

Sickening to say the least all of my career has been in engine service on a few big railroads. In my 55 years in the industry i have seen no let up on idiots that drive cars and trucks. I have been involved in 100s yes 100s of grade crossing incidents in my career. I got the state police to ride the locomotive from San Antonio to Austin and all the towns along the route were notified what we were doing. There was 5 arrests in this short trip. If someone would take this more seriously ESPECIALLY THE MEDIA with their little girl reporters say6inhg how bad the railroad is in their operations. It seems anyone can get a license to drive a truck. a close relation to me is a bi polar and he drives every day GOD help us.

Oh great! A steam excursion is “running” down the track at a walloping 7 mph and some dufus driver turns in front of it and is hit. More bad publicity for a struggling steam excursion train. Just what rail preservation needs!

Since the train was running at such a slow speed the driver probably believed it was stopped. I was going to say that “the driver thought,” but that is obviously not true.

Why couldn’t this have been Jeff Guse?

The driver is the type that needs to see ditch lights before he realizes it’s a train as the brightest two headlights on the planet weren’t enough of a hint.

It’ll stop for me. I’ve got the right of way.

Was aboard the Durango - Silverton train (when it was still operated by DRGW in 1961) when we struck a car on the north side of Durango. The driver was a local. No injuries.

While doing a track inspection from the front deck of a GP-7 on the FWWR early one Sunday AM (1992), we nearly struck a Ft Worth cop who drove around the crossing arms. Yep, arms were down and lights were flashing. No, he was NOT running emergency. Guess he was late for coffee and doughnuts.

The problem certainly isn’t new nor really that uncommon.

Calhoun’s is a bar and restaurant. Wonder if that had anything to do with it?

It’s been proven that it is impossible to observe anything with one’s sitting on their head!!

Let’s everyone stop picking on Jeff Guse, please.
