I want to model a small cement plant on my layout. Typically, when I travel see these types of cement plants in cities and towns. I have one in my city. The type I am referring to closely resembles and in some cases is identical to the Tews Cement plant found on on MR’s project layouts the Cripple Creek.
Keep in mind small plant versus large plant. I consider the Walthers Valley Cement a large one.
I can’t seem to find anyone selling something like this. Do i need to scratchbuild it?
I just used the Walthers Cement Plant. You could always try the Walthers kit, and “tweak” it to the way you want. Rather than spending time building you won.
Here’s a couple of shots of the cement plant on my layout.
Hi Ron, Have you typed in “cement plant model” on the Internet. They show how to model your own small plant, but I think you will still prefer to “tweek” the Walther’s model. It takes too much time to construct your own parts for a model. Bob Hahn
Are you thinking of a ready mix plant? If you check Walters, they have several versions available from different manufacturers. Also their asphalt plant could be pretty easily kitbashed into a concrete ready mix plant. Wouldn’t be too hard to scratch build one since it’s mostly a silo or two and big piles of gravel and sand.
Yes. There was a different Walthers kit that I saw, smaller. I went and looked at the prototype. I guess I can use what Walthers has and kitbash and modify it to what i’m envisioning.++
Get ahold of Pelle Soeborg’s book “Mountain to Desert: Building the HO Scale Daneville and Donner River”. He has a nice looking cement plant that is heavily kitbashed off of the Atlas kit. His is far more than a few silos with a shed. It’s just a great book to learn from too. Here’s a shot of it:
Heeeey I recognize that scene! It was on the cover of the 4/08 issue of MR! That one is I think the second MR issue I ever bought. It was the cover shot for the issue as I mentioned and for an article inside on how to make your layout seem more realistic. It talked about track details, i.e. using different code for sidings/spurs/mainline, and talked about different details for other scenes, like adding bill boards, company signs, I do believe it touched on traffic signs, and terrain. Didn’t know that was his. I’ve seen his stuff in past issues and get a little extra excited when I page through the latest issue or MR in the mail and notice his name on an article or too.
