Texas and Gulf Coast Railroad: The Dixie Road

Last night I came up with the perfect parther for the V&AL: the Texas and Gulf Coast Railroad; also known as the Dixie Road. The Dixie Road started in Texas in the 1880’s and built East and West out of Houston. By the 1980’s it had grown via buildign and buying, to cover most of the South Eastern US. With crack passenger trains such as the Texas Limited (yes I know there’s a real one, it was the 1st train I ever road), and hot-shot scheduled freights, the TX&GC is the perfect partner to the V&AL. Together the railroads serve all of the Eastern US, with seamless transfers and run-through freight and passenger trains.

Here’s a Dixie Road SD-60 in the typical TX&GC scheme:

That scheme looks a little like this Southern road.

I seem to recall on an old map a railroad sketched as the Brazos and Gulf Coast; the right-of-way appeared to follow the future alignment of the MKT.

I’m not quite sure whether dyed-in-the-wool Texans would really appreciate an association of their state with “Dixie”.

And, by the way, you might try ALLEGHENY.

Poteet: I am a pure-blood Texan, and darn proud of my roots. Texas and Dixie are two seperate places, but somewhere along the way, the Texas and Gulf Coast picked up the Dixie Road nickname. Also, there are agreat manny ways to spell Alleghenny, and many of them came from way back in the day when folks were trying to spell somethin they didnt know for sure. The V&AL was mispelt way back on it’s charter, and it has stuck to this day. Most folks get the message…

Enigma solved:

Ok so the Texas & GC baing called the Dixie Road IS a little odd. I figgured it out earlier today. The TX&GC went through an advertising campaign as their lines started to move north off the coast, they tried the colloquial name Texas & Dixie. Well folks started talkin, and things go shortened, till everyone else was calling it the Dixie Road. At that point, it was a bit late to try and clarify things so management just let the new name stick.

well no-one ever said that the TX&CG was the ONLY road in the SE. Got a scheme for the SEC?

Only on the locos I’ve painted, and it ain’t done yet cause i still gotta get some decal paper (just imagine the letters SEC on the side in big letters in Arial Black on the side in yellow, and the #s under the windows in black).

True, the “Dixie Road” could be SEC’s major competion. Also give it a reason to have created SESLG (Southeastern Shortline Group).

Looks good! I have 2 Southern SD-9’s in N scale that I wanna repaint. I’m thinking at least 1 will be a Dixie Road scheme.

how about a patched out SESLG one? just patch out the Southern lettering and logos, then add “Southeastern Shortline” Comic Sans MS. It could be for some shortline or regional that your RR connects with, and the sEC connects with, that got in financial trouble for some reason, and the SEC’s SESLG bought to save.

Or choose a mojor southern city, and it could be an independant connector road…

heck, if you have a somethign to trade, I coul do 'em both up, and you could have one, and I could have one…

btw… I didn’t expect a packer’s fan to have a southern RR… waddup with dat?

Sorry, can’t trade nothing (my parents wouldn’t let me). I love the south, but my sports loyalties are up North. My love of the Packers spawned from a shiny Brett favre card I had when I was 5 (only 8 years ago). When I heard how tough he was, I had respect for him, and my love for the Packers grew stronger. I think I’ll model a patched out or modified Dixie road unit sometime, though.

Where’d you come up with the idea for the scheme? I’m having problems getting inspiration for mine. ANd would’ you like a West Coast interchange?

All my schemes I just came up with outta my head. I have 3 you can look at to get an idea. I’ll post 'em later on this evening. Heck ya I need a West Coast partner!

Schemes can be inspired by your favorite prototype, or just pick a color you like, find one or two that go with it, and start playing around with them until you get something you like.

Added 11:54 AM: The SESLG is still in exsistance, but is now operated by SEC owned Augusta switching co. (ASC) [still patched out units). There is a major SEC engine terminal for their leasing co. (SECL), which mixes patching locomotives with the SEC offcial paint scheme, just lettered SECL. Just letting you know in case you were going to paint one for the SESLG (which I doubt you were).

oh goody. Half Moon can pick up and carry to the Coastal Ports then. Once we paint the stupid locos. Problem is that I don’t want to neccesarily duplicate anyone, and my options are Armor Yellow or Daylight Red. Not a problem with either, but not the way I wnat to go.The only one I;m completely sure I like is a Bicenntenial. One F3 set down, booku to go. I’m still trying to make the candy store scheme work, but it’s proving to ultimatley be futil;e. It’s t chime inhe only painting I’ve done that has left me with runs under the masking. But if I may, here’s what we’re working with so far

Where do you folks get those locomotive schematics or whatever?

Google. Try loking up “BL-2” There’s less of those than there are F3s in life, find the white schematic, click on it, it’ll take you to the motherload. I Repaint in Photoshop, requiring you to invert the color of the surface you want to work with to black, then lightining it to a grey. Then you can do whatever you want. MS Paint is probably easier to use though.
