Do these locomotives have more tham one engine in them? Do they turn engines on and off as needed, or do they just have one engine that runs all the time?

Looks like they reused the Blomberg trucks, too, or got another used pair. Nice pic.

Looks like 2 gen sets to me.

Interesting machines but designed by the Department of Ugly! (-;

This loco has two gensets. Each one generates 700 HP. The unit can run on one or on both. As I understand it, one nice aspect from a maintenance standpoint is that the gensets are mounted on rails and can be disconnected and pulled out for maintenance. That way, you can conceivably have a third genset that you keep as a spare and pull out one needing maintenance and install the spare, thereby reducing down time for the locomotive as a whole. The gensets are also low emission units, and by running only as needed, further reduce emissions into the atmosphere. Quite a concept. The best environmental policies, especially from the standpoint of sustainability, involve less use of fossil fuels; i.e., greater efficiency in operation; and better utilization; i.e., larger loads or greater capacity when in use.

They have two engines that cut on and off as needed. This helps save fuel and reduce emissions.

A face only a mother could love…

looks like a Lego switcher. yikes !

Actually George, these 2nd engine cuts in on demand. However, there is a lag time between the time the 2nd prime mover ticks over and the gen-set goes online. for this reason, gensets aren’t popular with crews.

Looks like it was designed by the same folks that produced the CF7.

Sound concept, but where’s Raymond Loewy when we need him? Those critters define ugly!

When I visited Milby in December the old EMD cabs were off to the side and the rebuilds were being completed. I am just happy the TCT dasn’t been dissolved/absorbed. The UK seems to like collecting aircraft cockpits, but don’t see a similar movement for EMD cabs here.

Ugly works for me. Let’s just call it… Form follows Function. This critter has character!
