That stated worth is a bit less than $600,000 per mile, or about $100 per foot. That seems rather high.

Edmond, you have to remember that this is “high-speed” rail, not your garden variety ROW. This requires property purchase, zero grade crossings, zero direct access, etc. To me the cost seems very low. What concerns me more is that, thanks to a non-existent national HSR plan, we will wind up with a bunch of disjointed HSR sections, utilizing different equipment, different signal systems, different construction methods, ad infinitum, that will never be able to be connected into any kind of rational HSR system. I refer to the “rail system” in the South immediately prior to the Civil War for a valid, if somewhat out of date, comparison.

Still much cheaper than a mile of Interstate highway.
