I have found a set of 211 texas special with two tank cars, a gondola and an operating hourse car and a caboose with a loop of track.
What do you think a fair asking price is? It goes up for sale tomarrow and I hope no one gets there before me.
Don’t know about the whole set but the 211 Texas Special AA’s are listed between $110.00 and $190.00 for the engines, depending on condition. For the whole group I would not offer more than $250.00 top bid. Start the bidding low or you will be the only bidder, also see if there is a reserve price to meet, if so bidding below the reserve won’t get you the item.

What the photo don’t show is a lot of rust on the wheels and some coupler issues on the cars. I am trying to clean the wheels up the best I can. the traction tires seem to be in tact and the motor runs.
It was a lucky find. The last time I found a train at a thrift store it was a 1930’s lionel caboose.
What a great find! You certainly did very well! From personal experience, thrift stores seldom have trains as they tend to deal more in clothes and household items than anything else. There is a really big mega-thrift store here that I visit often. When trains do show up, they are usually modern plastic battery operated sets, although HO trains do show up from time to time. Once, however, I found a very nice boxed 1960’s Japanese tinplate train set there. As far as smaller “normal” thrift stores go, the best I’ve done is an HO set. Still, there’s always a chance that some great train will be there and it’s always best to check in just to make sure, which you have proven very well!
Call me crazy, but I would gladly pay up to $300.00 for the lot.
