I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your patience and help with all my questions.

I have learned so many things from all of you both on the forum and in personal e-mails and pictures.

I can now tell an SD70 from a Dash 9. I know where the bell is, what the yellow thingies are and that 2 longs, a short and a long means “get your camera ready”.

I can tell a pig from a mixed, have finally figured out the drawbars and couplers, torpedos for the 4th, flat cars, square cars and cars that sit and dump and cars that have to lay down to dump.

I know that conductors rule.

I know what to wear and what not to wear to stay out of trouble on the forum and at work, what the little white houses are for (no moons) and W means whistle.

We don’t mix syrup, plastic and peas, Amtrak is always late and I have instructions on how to start my locomotive.

I know that engineers rule.

I have read GCOR thru once, know Big Boy had a front porch and little boys are dangerous around chocolate cake.

I have pictures of some of the people that won’t post theirs on the forum - eat your hearts out - and we are a handsome lot! Plus some very nice comments in personal e-mails.

I am still working on grades - I am up and down on that one - traction motors - I would put 7 engines on each train and that way I would be sure I had enough, and signals - that’s why I have a driver.

But most of all I appreciate your letting me peek into your conversations and sometimes poke around in them a little.

PS - what does “shut down the Waukesha” mean?

And - it looks to me like bottom dumps would be faster than rotary. Comments?

Hey what are big brothers and little devil nephews for.Anytime.Waukesha is a town in Wisconsin.in the movie grumpy old men a cnw train is shown at the begining of the movie.My hunch is that it might have to do with a cnw train to there from chicago or milwaukee.mike can you help?

Many moons ago the CNW ran through Waukesha on its way from Milwaukee to Madison and points west. There was a diamond and interchange with the Soo Line right near the center of Waukesha. The Soo Line is now the Canadian National (via Milwaukee Road & Wisconsin Central), and the CNW does not go beyond Waukesha (track stops just short of the WC track).

FYI: It is actually more difficult to operate a train that has too many locomotive for the train tonnage. If the loco’s are “dead” (not working), then they are just 200 ton weights to drag around, and if you use the automatic brake you must keep the engine brakes “bailed off” (kept from applying), then all that weight can help to pull a train in two if one is not careful. Also if the units are “on line” (working), the the power is not pulling very hard, and the train slack becomes sloppy unless the entire train is going up or down a hill (so the old heads told me). I never had that problem because I did not believe in it [;)]. To me, two units in the sixth notch are (approximately) equal in pulling power to six units in the second notch. (p.s. I would like to hear from other engineers regarding this). I know it is not a direct comparison, because (at least on the SD40-2) the turbocharger did not engage until the unit went into the sixth notch.

Yes, bottom-dump unit trains would empty much faster than rotary-dump gons. They don’t even have to stop. There is a little “prep time” involved, though, when the air line to operate the hoppers has to be charged.

And wasn’t Waukesha a brand name or a nickname for a type of passenger-car air conditioner back in the pre-HEP days?

I read the Waukeshaw in GCOR - it sez and I quote: Stopped in Tunnels - 1. Shut down diesel engine at once.
2. Shut down Waukesha or similar type engines.

and on a personal note - when you read Mookie’s posts - stick your tongue firmly in your cheek on most of them!

Mook, we love you and your questions. Your quest for Rail knowledge opens up alot of great discussion. You are a cool cat! I’m just guessing, but Waukesha is an engine manufacturer (not locomotive type engine, but, engine as in diesel gen sets) It may be referring to shutting down a generator to reduce diesel emitions in a tunnel. Like I said, just a shot in the dark. I remember reading something about that in the very dry GCOR. Mook, you read GCOR once through…I wanna know who was forcing you to read it! I’m gonna kick their ***! I don’t know of anybody that would read GCOR on their own free will. Hhehehehehe…Ken

Waukeshaw – Diesel motor made by (you guessed it) Waukeshaw in (you guessed it again) Waukeshaw. These operated the refrigerated air conditioning on passenger cars and also electrical generators. HEP did away with them. At one time, all long distance passenger cars had at least one Waukeshaw, some had two.

Tiny Tim past away some time back. Several others from the show are also gone now. (I guess you can say he is tip toeing through the tuplips) I’m gonna hear from Mookie on that one.

I thougth the show was super went I was a teen and saw the originals. Several years ago I saw some reruns on cable and thought “I used to like that show”. It just wasn’t as funny now as I remember it being then. Oh well, times change and so do people.

Kinda like watching re runs of Monty Python, its was off the wall and funny then, sorta tame now.
The new crop of stand ups, Chris Rock, guys like that, did in the tongue in cheek humor that forced you to think about what was said.
George Carlon did that a lot, you had to think about what he was saying, like his seven dirty words routine.
Then, it was shocking, but made some sense, from his standpoint.
Now days, you hear those words on HBO regularly.
Did have one of the great big flower decals plastered to my bedroom wall, does that count?
And a poster of Goldie Hawn.
