It seems strange to me that “hobos” would do this. Wouldn’t they want to not draw attention to themselves?
It sounds more like vandalism to me. Maybe they ran out of spray paint and couldn’t pass up the chance to screw something up. Or maybe a disgruntled ex-employee. Anybody been fired off that division recently? Or maybe it was some transients that just got out of jail after having been caught earlier. Whoever it was had to be one sick soul. The only way something like that will end is when the cars run into something. Luckily this time it wasn’t some innocent people.

This happened once on the CNW. A disgruntled employee got the Crystal Lake switch engine, a GP7. moved it to the Lake Geneva branch, and let 'er go in the middle of the night. It careened right into the cab car of the first scoot out of Lake Geneva, that was holding the main all night. The only injury was to an extra board collector who was assigned to the job for the week. It was late summer of 1970, and the extra man was facing an investigation concerning his long hair and beard. As a result of his injuries he was permitted to keep his golden locks.

Yes, that is definate vandalism to me. Hope they catch the jerks. If that had been one of those ex SP “oil can” trains, that would have been one nasty accident.

I seem to recall the photo of a wreck in a Trains magazine way back then. But if memory serves, did not the GP crash head-on into a E8?
The CNW always (during winter months) kept the first morning train into Chicago turned so the locomotive faced east (to help cut ice and snow on the road crossings).
