The $6464,000 Question?

I recently saw that a “Solid Shield” Rutland 6464 boxcar had sold for around $7,000.00 or $8,000.00.

I may have the opportunity to purchase a 6464-325 (B & O Sentinel) and a 6464-350 (Katy) brand new in the box. According to the McComas-Tuohy book, these are rarer than the Solid Shield Rutland, but I have the impression that they are not as valuable.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this area-particularly what they are worth?

There is also a 6464-250 (Blue Feather-Western Pacific) but, I believe, it is the later version with the plastic trucks.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The Rutland is one of the more expensive ones. The B&O (325) I beleive only came in sets. The Katy (350) I belive was sold in sets and as a separate item, and yes they are less expensive than the solid sheild Rutland. But when I say less expensive, still expect to pay good for these items. Greenburg’s price guide lists the 6464-325 at $320 for good condition and $640 for excellent condition. The 6464-350 lists at $125 for good condition and $245 for excellent condition. But this is not what they will sell for, but a good reference point. These are all very desirable cars and to find them mint in boxes is a true find.

Good luck and hope this helps some.
