The "Beast" in Indiana, plus some other monsters

Greetings,
I have seen the “BEAST” in Indiana, somewhat. And trains in biblical proportions, kind-of.

Here are some shots from Pine Junction, IN just east of Gary, Indiana. This railfan spot is where you can stand between the NS and CSX mainlines. Plus the EJ&E Elgin Joliet and Eastern has a yard and several tracks that run nearby. We were lucky enough to see a train on every track that we could see from the road. The NS mainline was extremely busy. The CSX line was pretty quiet. Also the EJ&E ran several trains over the bridge that crosses Clark Road. Below are some shots from Pine Junction, IN.

I mentioned the “BEAST” in the post title. Well here it is. The EJ&E #666 leads a transfer run out of the yard near Pine Junction. Not many railroads have locomotives numbered #666 for obvious reasons.

Got some local flavor in Indiana, a CSX unit (on the NS mainline) leads a Wisconsin Central SD45 westbound.

EJ&E #445 and #444 lead the local out of the yard. Soon these two units will loop around and cross Clark Road about 200 yards west of this bridge.

Finally NS power on the NS mainline. Here its an eastbound steel train. The second shot shows the string of coil cars.

Former Duluth Missabe and Iron Range unit, now working for the EJ&E comes into the transfer yard to pick up a cut of gondolas.

Well it is a GE. Soon as it belches fire and smells like brimstone, it will be obvious to its nickname.

Andrew,if you will look extra close at “The Beast”,it has a ‘rounded’ fuel
tank, not angular;that locomotive is an EMD, not a GE !!
And my best ‘guestimate’,an SD-38.( I don’t have an E,J & E roster in front
of me,to know for sure.)

Keith,nice shots;enjoyed them.

EJ&E 666 is an SD38-2. Actually, I think its a SD38-3 now that it has been rebuilt.

CNW8835,

You beat me to the post. But I will also mention that EJ&E #444 and #445 are SW1001’s, and former DM &IR #809 is an SD18M

I thought it was the CSX unit he was talking about. I thought it was an AC6000.

Opps silly me, should look a little more carefully.

It’s not even an AC6000.[:I]

I got abot 3.5 hours worth of video at Pine Jct., Nie place to be

You had better be carefull…don’t stand inbetween the Tracks

CSX declared that Private property…NO WARNINGS, Straight to Jail.

very nice pictures, especially the NS steel train, and the switchers.

Keith, some awesome shots of the EJE action! I’ll have to try an remember this spot if we ever get down that way, it seems awesome.

Noah

very nice pics i love that sd18m, its awesome

Greetings,

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes it is an awesome spot to watch alot of trains and see the EJE. We stood on shoulder of Clark Road between the NS and CSX tracks. We saw a couple of CSX and NS RR vehicles, no one stopped to talk to us. We never left the road though. I parked off the road to the west of CSX mainline. Just had to be careful for all the trucks on the road.

Good shots… Yes, that spot is probably one of the busiest places to watch EJ&E in particular. They still have a high nose ex DMIR running (#616), which also works that area. I have the EJE full roster on my site: http://eje.railfan.net/

I actually think the new yellow/white sill stripe are more scary then the #666.
