The Coffee Shop (a place to chat) Est. 2004

TurboOne: First I gotta consult the CFO’s on wether or not I can rearange my bedroom with the bed in the middle and a layout around the outside.
der5997: The grades will be used to get the trains over the dresser and short bookshelf.
I will scan the layout trackplan when our scanner starts working.
And could I get a deep fried chocolate expresso with two spoonfuls of sugar and 500ml of milk with a gingernut cookie crumbed and mixed in. Got to go. I’m currently working on a PS2 game design that my friend and I are working on. Mitchell

Hey guy’s I ran out of the wood friendly glue so I’ve stopped trying to recesitate that old van for now so I thought I’d come in and hang for a while.[8D] To our new frozen Canuck in Sask[#welcome] come on in and enjoy the fun and our hot liquids just don’t drink the stuff I make though cause *** thinks it’s to strong[:O] I was just trying to keep him awake while he works on his train room[swg] By the way that boiled down coffee would make a good rock stain’ I’ve seen it happen on the old club layout [:O] took several layers of ground foam to cover, after that we put in bylaw banning food and drink from the layout area. Catch you all later Rob

I was on the phone this evening with Bob and he gave me the impression, well actually he told me I might have “snubbed” JP! Ooops.

JP: when you were talking about exchanging rolling stock, were you refering to virtual RR’ng or were you actually talking about exchanging real HO cars?

If you were talking real cars then I misunderstood you and apologize for my hostile protectionism. I’ve got several requests at this time for decals and I look forward to exchanges so if your interested just e-mail me and we’ll work something out for sure.

As it stands I’m hosting the Almost Nothing and Clinch Valley.

Bob: as always it’s a pleasure!

Saskred: welcome to our Coffee Shop. This ain’t the Ruby and you won’t find any of us as pretty as Lacy. But we can talk!

Evening friends,

Work is INSANE! This was supposed to be an easy time, and I just got home from the office a couple of minutes ago. After 10:00 p.m. eastern. No time to do anything fun. [:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]

And then there’s the weather. I just checked the radar )and we’re about to get clobbered by a strong thunderstorm. THUNDERSTORM in northern Indiana in January! Two weeks ago it was -15 fahrenheit. Then ice storm, now thunderstorm.

The only good thing is that I’ll be going to Alabama Friday, just about the time the cold weather returns.

Poor Phil. Take care, buddy. Good to see that you’re making the best you can of it.

G-night, all! (Gotta be at work at 6:30 a.m. [:(!]

[#welcome] saskred: Please don’t drip on the carpet as Elliot our beloved founder gets awful upset at that sort of thing [(-D] I’m up the shore from Fergie and luct in Nova Scotia, and yes, so far as we can tell, there’s no-one in here as pretty as Lacy. (Big_Girl hasn’t shown up for a while, so is virtually invisible [:D])

Speaking of not showing up, I’m a bit concerned for lupo. There have been some very bad storms in Europe. lupo’s in a low lying area on the coast, and we haven’t heard from him in days…

TrolleyRob

However, if you want to model a peat operation (as I did on the Athabasca and Western in the HOn21/2 section) then coffee grounds are the exact thing you need for the piles of peat.

Fergie: Just hoping NS Power can keep the lights burning through this ice storm, and that in fact it changes to rain before it gets serious. The forecast looks as if we might get lucky that way.

Ed: PBS stations in the States may be a source for VHS versions of some of those Brit shows. They give them out as incentives for membership drives, and would likely sell them too. We’ve just watched “Yes Prime Minister”, on a PBS station this evening.

I’ll see if I can find lupo’s last post, and email him.

Goodnight all, and God Bless.

[#oops], meant to say “hi” to saskred and forgot. So [#welcome] friend. Be sure and post like you’re voting in Chicago–early and often. [;)]

Hey der, did you like “Yes, Prime Minister”? That is the sequel to the early “Yes, Minister.” Frankly, I think “Yes, Minister” is the simply the BEST TV PROGRAM EVER! I have the complete set of Minister and Prime Minister. I watch them constantly. HILARIOUS!

I told my daughter I would buy her a dog on one condition–that I could name it Sir Humphrey Appleby. She was desperate enough to agree. [:D]

Take care all. I have to shut down before the big storms clobber us. G’night!

Lawrence: Kris says that’s a fabulous name for a dog, and I second the motion!

Going back 2 pages at a time from page 226 I found a lupo post on page 216 or 214 ( I forget which now). The date was Dec 29th. Shook me a bit, has it really been that long? Anyway, sent him a note.

Hi all coffee clubbers. I just finished drawing up some of GDRMCo’s locomotives that will be on the layout. There are three different paint schemes for each of the different locomotives. Ore Black for cab units, Queensland Maroon and Yellow for hood units and Great Dividing Range Green and Creme for switchers. So far I have completed a Ore Black PA-2 and a GDR Green and Creme S-4. Here they are:
PA-2: http://www.railimages.com/albums/micklegg/afj.gif
S-4: http://www.railimages.com/albums/micklegg/afk.gif
Hope you like them and any comments will be appreciated.

I have a job watching the creek next to the house tonight. Right now it is running bank full ,but since the house is only 15 feet from the bank, it could be surrounded by water by morning. Needless to say we don’t have a basement, train layout is in family room on second floor. Water hasn’t been a problem in the last 10 years, but weather is weird this year.

Evening all, have to type fast, have a better offer tonight from the misses.

Mitchell, I like the S4. Just to humor me, can you do one with really wild colors? Just want to see one.

[#welcome] saskred, enjoy the warm up, coffee sounds better than your weather. This CA boy wouldn’t survive !

Hello to all Jims, seems to be the popular name tonight. I screwed up and got the wrong first letter. ![:)]

Jay, welcome back [8D]

Robert great message, oooooowwwwwwww you made me think [:D]

Luct, put in your order now, and I throw in two add ons, how bout bee pollen and some ginsing. Who’s next for a smoothie ?

To all of you in the snow stay warm, don’t go outside, play with your trains.
To all of you that have the rain coming, your welcome from the formerly wet west coast.

The backyard had 4 inches now it is gone, by tomorrow it might even be dry. We had more rain in the last two weeks than we had all of last year.

Take care all,

Tim [8D]

Hi guys, and welcome saskred and a few others that I havn’t seen recently.
Got power back today, 7 days after it took a powder. (Read like Groucho) And let me tell you, seven days without power makes one weak! Say the magic word and win a duck!
Anyway, now you know why I keep my graveyard shift.
Later today, I’ll be pumping out the bomb shelter, the well pit and gathering up the 2-300 limbs down. But I’ll have some good campfires this fall.
Pennsyhoos- Looks like about now the entire top of the state is getting pounded, hopefully no ice, just (ha!) rain. Hang in there.
Went to Muncie today, never seen so many bucket trucks and line trucks. They are doing their best to get everyone back on before the next wave of rain, followed by near 0 F temps get here…sometime before sunrise if they are right.
Also got to see NS running through town, a couple of GEs on point. Amy said as we were watching it roll by that she will never look at a train the same way again, she even remembered some of the tanks she had got me for C-mas, and she saw a few that she said I needed…oh yeah, thats what papa wants to hear.
Took her to a scrapbook shop, saw quite a few things that could be used in MR-ing, tons of sticky letters and small industrial thingies. Told her we would be going back as soon as I thought about what they could be.
Put some safety striping on my big ALCos the other day, well wait, it was over a week ago, and they will be more visible at the crossings so my cops won’t have to fill out so many accident reports. Used an orange Sharpie, came out pretty good.
BTW, if anyone needs silver (window frames, piping etc) Sharpie makes a silver pen that does a great job, even tho the tip is rather large. I put new aluminum frames in one of my cabeeses.
Might take tomorrow off so I can get my placed cleaned up, if so I will either try to check in Sat from home or I’ll see y’all again Sun night.
Everybody keep your head down, there’s

Hi all. The layout is a no go so I will have to just pretend I have one. So I will have nothing to do over the last of the school holidays. I’ll just have to con my parents into letting me just paint and display locomotives. I’ll have a deep fried chocolate mud cake coffee and a oven baked T-Bone steak.
Turbo: I might be able to do one.

Here ya go Turbo. Didn’t have a undec S-4 on hand so I did a RSD15 instead. I call this SHOP WORKERS GONE WILD!!! RSD15.
http://www.railimages.com/albums/micklegg/afl.gif

Where Lupo is. Os not at home! You must have missed his farewell as he is presently basking in the sun. [censored] He left the first of January if memory serves me correctly.

We still have power, knock, knock as we got more pellets and snow then rain, which is coming.

Luc sorry to hear about the Miss’s as I’ve had kidney stones and yes they are very painfull as they lefy me crawling across the deck one morning.

C Jay good to see you back buddy!
Anyway I gotta go

Good Mornin’ Everybody,
It’s a gray, rainy day in the mountains this morning. There’s quite a bit of wind right now, and winter is finally supposed to return tonight. Considering what everybody else has been dealing with though, we have nothing to fuss about.

I’ll fini***he last of the wallpaper this morning. Fergie, thanks for the tip on fabric softener. It really helps. I need to put a good coat of primer on the walls, and repaint the laundry room. Since the color selection commitee is still looking at paint chips, I have a few days to get that done.

Saskred and Jay_C, welcome and welcome back. Have some coffee and a danish, and enjoy.

Luc, I’m sorry to hear that your wife’s dealing with kidney stones. I’ve had two bouts with them. They are extremely painful. I hope she gets better quickly.

Ed, I’ll tell Bill M. hi for you and everybody else. He’s been very busy lately with multiple projects. The swap meet Saturday should be fun.

Philnrunt, I’m glad you finally got power back. A week without it is a long time. Ice storms are truly nasty things.

Pennsyhoosier, I remember “Yes, Minister”. It’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. It’s absolutely hilarious. So is “Fawlty Towers”. They’re both great shows.

Grayfox 1119, I’d recommend 3/4" plywood for the subroadbed. I used 1/2" for mine and I’ve had to go back and add risers in a few places to eliminate sags. If I were starting over I’d definitely use 3/4". The foundation for the railroad just isn’t a good place to try to cut corners or economize, at least not in my opinion. I’d try for a 30" minimum radius to accomodate the 2-6-6-2. It, and a lot of other locos and long rolling stock will get around tighter curves, but they will look better and have less overhang on bigger curves. Once again, I didn’t do that. My minimum radius is 24". My biggest locos are light mountains. They, and my Branchline coaches are OK on 24" curves with easements, but they’d look a lot

Good Morning All:

Fergie is a talker, we talked for better then an hour and covered all of the subjects, from the Tsuanimi to the storm in NS. I really enjoyed it.

Mom is now with us for three weeks and I forgot about how irritating the TV is in the morning at a level that a partially deaf person can hear it, because she won’t wear her hearing aid, because she isn’t hard of hearing. Everyone else just mutters. BUT I’M VERY GLAD THAT I STILL HAVE HER!!

Lawrence:
If, on your trip to Alabama, you are anywhere around Tuscaloosa, Rexhea would probably be glad to show you his layout. He is very interesting to talk to and the pictures of his layout on his webb site are impressive. I’ve got his phone number that I’ll give you if you e-mail me. I just called Rex to see if it was OK and he said he’d love to show you his layout.

Jim:
I use the 3/4" BC. I like the way I can start an incline, the plywood is so strong that it gives me a very easy transition from flat to riser. If you want to give me a call, e-mail me and I’ll send you my phone number. I’ve found out what to do and what not to do. I’m not saying that my way is the only way to do it but, their isn’t any reason for you to re-invent the wheel.

I’ve got to get to work so
Ya’ll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY
Bob

Morning all, thanks for having the coffee brewing.

GDRMCo thanks for the train pic, now that is a train. Stick it in front of some palm trees and we have SoCal.

Anyone for a smoothie this morning ?

Hope everyone is warming up and drying out, especiallyour OHIO brethern.

We are going to be upper 60s low 70s today. Not a cloud in the sky. Backyard dried out, didn’t find any fish.

Take care all

Tim[:D]

Thanks for the kind wishes all. Turns out that for the first 60 days they have found someone else they wanted to send, but I might still be on the short list to fill a spot there later in the spring. It would be rewarding work, that’s for sure. Always nice to be able to make a difference!

Tom - the next “permanent” duty station will be Fallon, Nevada. I’ll probably move in early May (I have to be “at work” in June to start turning over with the guy I’ll take over for).

Fergie -
Well, I was thinking along the lines of - not sure how this works but have seen some forum members talking about this - say I have customer ‘X’ who has a customer ‘Y’ (your layout) and ‘Y’ has just ordered a carload of product from ‘X’ . How do we get ‘X’ and ‘Y’ their goods? Either I take a car from ‘X’ and move it to a yard and label it as being ‘off layout’ to ‘Y’ (simulation), or we, on ocassion, actually send a few cars to eachother (interchange (tackage/hualage rights?) comes to mind here?) from time to time via mail, UPS, or some other carrier.
Solution ‘A’ is the cheap/free way out, and solution ‘B’ would allow us both to see different cars/equipment on our layouts, just like the real-time roads do. Everytime I go by the CSX yard here, I always see cars/equipment there w/ different roadnames.
What are your thoughts on this?
Afternoon clubbers! How’s everyone today. Temps into the 50’s already w/ a forcasted high of 65 yet to come this afternoon. Then, it all goes downhill in both temps and precip!
Hope everyone has a great day…
Take care…
JP

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Just finished off another good cup of coffee, and some fresh squeezed orange juice, so I’m set to go. The weather was warm again yesterday, it probably got up to at least 90º, if not a bit higher. That seems to be changing now. As we speak the wind is blowing hard from the north, clouds have blown in, and the temperature is probably down in the high 60’s. It won’t get near where you guys up north are, but it wouldn’t surprise me to have temps in the low 50’s by tonight.

I suspect that this is the same front that’s going through Texas about now. But I think it’s a bit colder there.

Luc, hope Gloria’s problem with the stones gets resolved quickly.

Teffy, that’s great improvement in your Mother’s eye. Here’s hoping tomorrow’s surgery in the other eye yields equally good results. Maybe you need some earplugs to help with the noise from the TV?

It’s the family’s, although we take care of the maintenance of it. It’s about 4-5 acres. We’re actually in the middle of trying to figure out what we have there, no one had done that before. I believe we probably have about 500 trees (of various types of oranges and tangerines), but there are probably easily about 150 of those that are too young/small to produce anything. There’s space for about 800. We may add some more over the next few years. The market for oranges down here is very bad, so there’s really no good reason to pour money into it to improve the yield. We maintain it more as a hobby than anything else. Wholesale price for oranges down here runs around $0.02/lb, or $40/ton. You can buy a whole crate of oranges by the side of the road in this area for $0.90.

Noah, sounds like you’re coming along well with the concept for the ARK.
