The Coffee Shop (a place to chat) Est. 2004

Jim although Canadian hobby craft paid for the original molds, they turned them over to US Lifelike and they ran NYC, MLW,& Pennsy so you should be able to pick one up.They are in the proto 1000 line though the detail is proto 2000. You won’t be able to get a Canadian unit in the states though as they were exclusivly distributed through Lifelike Canada.Being as the us ones were made with the Canadian tooling your details will likely be wrong on the US shells though if your not picking the differences aren’t that great anyway and they are one heck of a locomotive(run like swiss clocks) Rob

Hello all.
Thanks to all for the good wishes and even better advice reference the three rings. Feel like a Hobbit now, what with all of this ring talk!

Paul- I hadn’t thought about the Coffee Shop for the reception, but that would be the berries!
And to put all of your minds to rest about how she feels about MRing and the such, she already wants to build a “G” outdoor railroad, but only if it runs “like a real one, not round and round”. Also, SHE suggested we get married on the S.S.Badger (formerly of Pere Marquette fame) as it crossed Lake Michigan. I contacted them and they said fine, but laker captains dont have the authority to perform marriages. I was wondering about that, Paul, did you know that?

How about it Ferg? Can we get hitched on the Cornwallis? We’d have plenty of ice for the drinks, at least. And do I not remember a rather definitive statement issued by MESS management concerning possible dieselization of same? And do I remember correctly that statement left no room for doubt that the MESS would NOT, NEVER, NEIN, NYET, NIX NO WAY go to those infernal combustion machines?

Or did I dream that?

OK guys, again, thanks for the good thoughts, I think this will work out quite well. And if it dosn’t, you’ll see me alot more here, in the Club Car, drowning my sorrows and deadening my nerve endings!

KenLarsen- I feel bad I havn’t gotten in touch, but we’ve been using these good days to get yard work done, even bought a new mower a few weeks back. Ajo mentioned that some day it will hit me that I could have gotten alot of trains for the money, but I just pretend that I’m running an ALCo around my yard. Ahhh, a good imagination is a blessing. Need to get it to smoke more, though.
Looks like a promotion to 3 star is coming soon, kinda like 2 blue ones. Gonna miss 'em. Hope they give me an Armoured Division to run when it comes thru, like Patton.
Take care, folks!

Zoe, 2 Tylonol for me and a Perrier…

Good evening guys, woke up with a nasty headache/neck pain, that’s the only reason I’m awake this time (2:25amEDT). Just a few quick notes:

***, thanx for the link to the Gas Prices spreadsheet!

NorthernPhil, don’t sweat it, at least now you’re back. That’s really [8D] about AmyJo liking garden railroads - and highly apropos, since you seem to be outdoors 90% of the time these days![swg]

Attaboy, I thought stuff like that was only supposed to happen on model train layouts (about 4ft off the floor)![:D]
. . .
Back to bed now, C-yall later!

Good (late) Night or (Early) Morning, you decide which. [:)] (For me, it is late night.) [;)]

Well as my luck would have it I downloaded the suggested aMSN messenger and within 5 minutes received an error message that I had a “Bug”. [:(!] The stupid thing opened messages with about 5 other people that I DID NOT start. [:(!] I hope no one else gets it.

The original virus I received came from a Canadian railroad worker but he didn’t send it, it sent itself. Sooooooooooooooooooooo don’t open any files until you check with the sender to be SURE they sent them. Msn messenger is real bad about sending the “Smiley Central” link without the person who is credited with sending it, sending it. (I hope that makes sense [B)] ) That is how I got the first virus. [:(]

A special “Thank You” to Phil in Florida for the new addition to my Frisco collection. [:)]

There are lots of “things” going on right now but I can’t elaborate on them just yet. (Don’t ya just hate it when someone does that to ya? [:0] [8] [B)] [}:)] [:p] ) Maybe soon I can share a thing or two, hopefully. [;)]

I sure could use some of Ed’s OJ. Since I had my cold / sore throat / sinus problems a while back I have been buying Tropicana Pure Premium, Not From Concentrate It is expensive but REALLY good (and good for you). I like the “Lots of Pulp” juice. [:D] [:p] [:D]

Did you all see the loco Elliot posted in the Garden Railroad forum? It was in the thread entitled, “Moo.” [:D] [^] [:D] I don’t think I will paint one like that, well not while I am sane anyway. [8D]

Bob (Teffy) [:)]

Are you planning another fall trip this year? If so, don’t forget to stop here. [:D]

Congrats Phil on the “Lady”. Does she have any sisters? [;)]

Ohhh myyy, almost 3 am. I guess that means bedtime. [B)]

Good night

Evening trippers…

Wow, I ask a simple question about Gas prices and the Clubbers respond with a basic lesson in US economics in the late 60’s [:P] Thanks guys, it is the help like this that really gets me excited about MRRing and this forum[:D]

Not much to report on the DITM,there wont be much more accomplished until I get the few turnouts I need to solve the problem, I mean capitlise on my opportunities, created by my “vision shift”…

I wish I knew as much when I started as what I do know, and considering I know precisely 5/8 of absolutely nothing at this stage, that is quite a statement… all the reading is paying off though, my newer plans and ideas seem to have more legs than where I started when I laid my first track.

I have started the negotiations subliminally with the CFO for the space I need to add the extra town and staging area to the layout… she doesn’t know we are negotiating yet, but I assure you we are [:P] Anyways, the roundhouse and turntable that only fit onto the extension will arrive late this week and it seems such a waste not to be able to use them [:D]

Anyways off to build and paint some more on the newly cleaned DRT…GL HF

Just popping in to say hi between revision – how come most of the “recommended texts” have very little to do with the course…[:)]

***, I’ve been saying ever since we ordered it that 256 isn’t enough – think we might wait until the warranty runs out then upgrade it, otherwise if something goes wrong Dell could become awkward and claim it was our upgrade that did it – ah well, it’s reasonably quick at the moment!

Nick, yep, it’s a Bachmann 37 – 37429 from their first run, bought before all the fuss about doors being a millimetre too deep – looks fine to me and runs very well. To date, it’s the only British loco I’ve “chipped” (Lenz 1025)

Jim – sorry, should have mentioned that amsn is something of a “work in progress” – mine sometimes opens chat windows for no apparent reason (I think it’s if the person on the other end looks at your display picture) and I’ve had one PC out of four refuse it completely. On the other hand, it’s the only msn-compatible thing that runs under Win 95 (all my old 1996 Toshiba laptop can handle) and Linux – sometimes you have to work with what you can get (until MS stop attempting to force us to upgrade by locking out older Windows flavours…). Sorry if it caused any problems!

Bye for now

Good Morning all,
Coffees on and Zoe says the scones look great. I’ll have a blueberry one with my regular coffee if you please.
Northern Phil congrats - had the ring in nose for 26 years here and when you pick the right person the time just flies. Best of luck (why not get hitched on a rail trip?)
Der John - did i read correctly that i can use a decoder powered reverse loop gadget with my (so far) DC set? Who makes it if you don’t mind my asking?
Fergie - I’m trying to balance you out here going from F-7s’ to DL109 and now I,m looking at the streamlined J4 4-8-4 to convert into an I-5 which so far I’ve only found running on the New Haven that I want to model. With all those bits out moving where you can see them, steam is way cool.
Cheese 3 - I like the layered look you are thinking about as well - it allows multiple levels which you can tie together with scenery instead of spending all your time building fascias and worrying about tidying up the underside of the platform etc. Are you going to try to post the design? Others got some real good advice on the layout page.
Trent B - enjoy the time and get better. Light duty is for recovery. One of my friends is out with a knee injury, but he was able to run his race car last weekend. We rode him pretty hard about abusing the system, but the fact of the matter is that he can’t walk too well just yet let alone run after a bad guy if he had to. Told him if we didn’t like him we wouldn’t have noticed.
Back to work now. Lots of stuff to fini***his week and a trailer to send to Road America (Wisconsin) tomorrow. I go out to Summit Point next Weds. so it starts up again. Best wishes and prayers for those injured and recovering. regards, J.R.
the faster I go the behinder I get

Good Morning All

Care to join me Mr. Inch as the conversation is free and the coffee fresh.

Paul: Knit one, pearl two buddy! Enjoy your new hobby, Can I have a scarf for next winter?

Phil:

OK Dorothy click those heels and repeat after me

“There’s no place like home, There’s no place like home”!

Now go home!!!

P.S. you never asked me about “the other ring” as it would sure come in handy just about now[}:)] (Makes handling the “Bull” a lot easier)

Please Remember these Diesels do not belong to the MESS, They are CN/CP units with trackage rights. The MESS disavows all ownership of these things!!! They are, shall we say, tolerated.

James: Good to see you back online as these virus thingys are quite nasty. I had my share of problems but everything is guarded bya Firewall, antivirus and Webroot.

Weel Luct was able to make over last night for about an hour and apart from a couple of minor derailments all went well. Hopefully I can get John over with Luc and some more track installed and have a real Ops Session one of these days. I think Luc liked the “Pink Engine”[:I]

Well that’s it for me as the ground is to wet to garden but I have a garage to clean and gear to pack up as I go back to work Thursday (alongside this month) and have a Scout Camp this weekend. ***: can you hold off on the bad weather this weekend? Just give me until Monday, please!!!

JR: I love steam and would have it all steam but with the limited

TrainsRMe

Good morning gents, just a quick note before we head out for the day…

FERGIE: Weekend weather should be OK , so enjoy the camping trip with the scouts. Just hope the black flies are not up your way yet in the woodlands.

We are in Boston tonight for the RED SOX game tonight, I feel so bad for Ed, being so far from his native team that he used to see when he lived in Connecticut, but alas ED, they do come to Texas to play, so maybe you can see them then AND visit the LHS also…how about THOSE oranges Ed?

Have a great day everyone,

A little bit of oil in the gas tank should solve that… [:D]

Ed

Good morning!

Nothing for me this morning, just a quick drop in and a quick hello!

The dentist says I can’t eat for the next hour or so. I just got back from the dentist this morning and had oral pocket gum treatment on the whole right side of my mouth, all deadened and can hardly talk right now. So I’m off to work now.

Later,

Ryan

Good day all -
Zoe - a labatt’s Blue for me on JimCG’s tab!
Thanks Jim. It was refreshing!
Well Just a quick in and out for me for now. I’ll stop back in later…
JP

Good afternoon clubbers,

I took a ‘sick’ day today since that migraine kept me awake most of last night. Thought I’d make the best use of the time, by drawing up an image that describes where I’m at with my track re-wiring project. I wanted to have an in-line image, but I can NEVER get those railimages.com links to give me anything but the little red X [banghead]. (I’ve displayed dozens of pictures from my private web site without any problems, go figure?)

So here is a link to it, at least THAT worked the last time I checked. (Read the ‘description’ text to see what the various track colors mean.)
http://www.railimages.com/gallery/kenlarsen/aay?full=1
This represents only ~25% of the total real estate of my planned layout. But since it is the most complex, I’m hoping that the remaining tracklaying/wiring will not seem so daunting once I get this repowered and tested. As you can see, I only have 3 more track sections to rewire. That light gray track running along the top will probably never be used, since it will be hard to reach once I install the ore dock and stockpiles. I’ll include the other planned layout sections in future images sometime soon.

Teffy mentioned to me the other day, that dust is a major problem in garage layouts. I’m hoping that it won’t be necessary for me to put permanent drywall over the doors because I’ll still need to open them once in a while. I plan to pose a question about this as a topic on the main GD page.

Adam -
Apparently somebody disposed of my May 2005 MR, now I guess I’ll have to see if my local library has it on their mag rack [sigh]… Is this going to be a narrow guage pike like the one in the magazine, or are you just using the basic design elements?

Ryan –
Hope that dental work stops hurting soon and that you can actually taste the food you’re eating…

JP –
Glad you could join us, even for a bri

You mean like this??? (click on the image to enlarge it)

Regards

Ed

Ed, what’s your secret? That is exactly what I put in my posting, but every time I do the image “preview”, only the little red X shows up. Do I have to pay railimages money for a premium account or something…[%-)] [BTW Thanx for making it visible!]

COFFEE TIME !!!

I got the round of free refills… line 'em up.
G’day

Matt, depending on how difficult it would be to add (or how obvious it would be that you’ve gone in and added) memory, if you run into problems, you could pull the ‘new’ memory out before it had to go in for service. Then they could correct whatever needed fixing, and you could re-upgrade the memory after any repairs. Unless Dell is going to claim that putting others’ memory in violates their warranty. I’d be suprised if any manufacturer wanted to try that nowadays.

Blessings, and hope that gives you another option,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

TrainsRMe, [#welcome] back - it has been a while. Good to hear you’ve been making progress on house and layout. So I gather you have a helix’s helix??[swg] Hope you get over your sinus problems soon so you can get the layout moving again. Good of you to keep your stay this time brief so Zoe and the rest of us didn’t get your infection. You know how hard the ladies work here, so we couldn’t deal with it if they were out and we had to do…[:O] self-service in here![}:)][;)]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
