hey guys!! i was just wondering the correct way to measure my layout. It is a 4x8 with a 36x80 backwards L so its 11 feet long but in some parts its 48 inches wide and in others it sticks out a total width of 80 inches how would i measure this correctly?? thanxs in advance Tim
They are sometimes measured the way you describe (48x96 with 36x80 extension) or, overall size, meaning the size of the room that has to house it (121x80)…
It’s your call…

Jeff i think i will just stick to calling it a 4x8 with a 36x80 backwards L extension but thanxs for the post. Tim
The correct way to measure my railroad??
Umm, use a tape measure???
is that ho scale tape
If it is an O scale layout and you use an HO scale tape it would look twice the size it actually is.
Its N scale Challenger in not a dumb a$$ but i wanted to no the correct way to measure it seeing as it is a backwards L
I too have an L-shaped layout. I always tell people that it’s “10 x 16 feet.” However, I also add that it runs on a 2’ wide shelf along two walls in my workshop.
Mine is shaped like a capital E and it is basically 9’x13’ but I find that I can’t tell people about it without explanation as well. I just say it’s 9x13 then explain the shape. There doesn’t seem to be any easier way.
