Me thinks Mr Ackman has confused Harrison with Harriman.
Hunter Harrison, the greatest railroader of all time? Harriman, Vanderbilt, Gould, Hill, Claytor, to name five who are definitely better than Harrison, and there are probably more! Ackman obviously hasn’t been around this business a while.
“What the hell is public interest?” That’s the crux. The guy doesn’t know and claims he wants to run a transcontinental railroad. Obviously he doesn’t want to run it for the good of the public. It’s all about Hunter. I’ve heard of fairy-tale dragons that were less greedy than this one.
I would not get to close to Mr. Ackman right at the moment. I imagine the stench coming from his head is real bad!!
Ackman bought a pile of CP shares under $100 Cdn., then reduced his ownership level from nearly 14 % to about 9%, selling at around $240 Cdn. That why he thinks EHH is the greatest railroader, EHH made him lots of money.
W Carlson,As Rush Limbaugh has said you follow the money.HH is pompous idiot acting like one.If you read this HH please do not waste you time on this Norfolk Southern stockholder & because my mind is made up & I against this.HH is the greatest what???Give me Al Perleman any day.Dick Dillworth took out steam in the blink of an eye.How about Wick Moorman?Look what has took place within NS under his leadership the past years witht eh Heritage Units & steam coming back on center stage.THe N & W 611 is a great example.I was able to see the Nickel Plate 765 twice back In July because NS’s full commitment to steam,Matt Rose is not the pompous fool that hh is.I had a choice to buy shares of stock in either Norfolk Southern or CSX is 2008 with the $600 rebate check.but because of the politics involved with the foriengers with TCI interfering with CSX I chose Norfolk Southern even though I could stand the black & white locomotives while loving the blue & yellow on the CSX locos.Have I bought stock in CSX like I leaning towards I would have been kicking myself for the reasons:1 I live 8/10s of a mile for a 2 NS main line.2.Those 20 Heritage Units.3 Seeing the NKP 765 twice in the 3 years.4.There are tons of places up & down the NS Wabash Main line to watch which I will attend in the future.I love NS today & what they stand for & how close they are to home for me to see them.
Considering the problems shippers such as the one that I worked for had with IC and CN after Harrison, I wouldn’t let him run a 10-year old’s HO set. He is nothing but a clown.
Well said, Tim Backus! Ackman and Harrison have to be the two biggest egomaniacs walking the face of this earth, they are their own mutual admiration society. NS shareholders should pay attention to the fact that their board of directors UNANIMOUSLY REJECTED CP’s proposal; for if the buyout/merger were to go through, they very likely would be in for a big disappointment on return in the long run.
Well said John Simpson all those men built railroads neither of the two mentioned have built anything.
if one uses the Merriam-Webster first definition of “railroad” as a verb, then the “greatest railroader” term may apply aptly:
Full Definition of RAILROAD
transitive verb
1
a : to convict with undue haste and by means of false charges or insufficient evidence
b : to push through hastily or without due consideration
For what it is worth, the IC was a well-rationalized system well before Harrison worked there, so there is no validity to the claim of great progress during his tenure.
And, there have been “slash and burn” CEO’s before him, perhaps as a pattern…one who comes readily to mind was Menk in the middle 1960’s on the CB&Q, who went on to greater things.
