This is very interesting - there is a slight connection between the incidents in the hit film The King’s Speech, and the hobby of model railroading, and a stronger connection between the King and the general hobby of miniature modeling.
Thanks for the link Dave. What was really enjoyable was reading the whole article without once having the modeler characterized as a kook. Hats off to the author for leaving that sophmoric tidbit lying where it belongs.
That is a really nice article. An interesting sidenote, Hornby’s O gauge “Princess Elizabeth” from the late thirties (named for George VI’s daughter Elizabeth - the current Queen) is often cited as the first mass-produced “scale” locomotive available in the UK. It holds a similar status to the Lionel Scale Hudson that came out in the 1930’s in the US.
And wouldn’t you love to have one of each, if only for mantlepiece displays? The Lionel Scale Hudson, if you have ever been privileged to see one in good condition, is a really impressive hulking hunk o’metal!
I have seen the scale Hudson in person, I loved it, as it really is a nice model, but oh the historical significance of both, at least in the world of model train enthusiasts.
