The Long Green Line

In the mid to late 60’s John Deere put together an ad campaign to introduce their new line of farm equipment. They produced a video and still shots of a Burlinton GP ( I think, I was pretty young at the time) pulling a line of flat cars loaded with John Deere eguipment. The new green paint scheme of the Burlington combined with all the John Deere equip. on board made for quite a long green line. They filmed it along the line between Galesburg, Il and Barstow, Il. Much of the filming was done along the line that bordered my grandfathers farm so we enjoyed watching the action all summer while baling hay and straw and combining. Hoped maybe we would get in the movie with our old John Deere 70 waiting at a field crossing with a load of hay. But when we saw the film at the local dealer no luck. Does anyone else remember this John Deere ad and if it would be possible that it still exists somewhere .

Don’t know if the ad exists, and I don’t remember seeing it, but you could say I remember the ad because if I am remembering correctly they also did some sort of record album promotion to go along with this campaign. I can remember that the album cover had what you just described, the CB&Q or BN train with all the Deere equipment on flat cars and the record was a collection of train songs. I’ve still got this album, “somewhere” and if I ever find it, I thought it would be cool to hang up in my store ever since Athearn came out with all of their John Deere model train items. Thanks for posting this, I didn’t know where the shot on the cover was taken, but this has to be one and the same advertising effort.

Now this is cool. I’m surrpised they didn’t try to include your 70 in one of the shots to show it still going strong.

All summer? Wow, those were the days. Today they’d award the job on Monday, prep on Wednesday, shoot it on Thursday, and have it through post by the weekend. Dave http://www.dpdproductions.com - Featuring the TrainTenna Railroad Radio Antennas -
