Already posted in the “State of California investigating Evil Monster UP Intermodal Train” thread.

Not to mention another thread about the 18,000-foot train, a few times in the Trackside Lounge, and in the Newswire.

I was wondering how come the R.R. are doing this type of test? I bet is going to be hard for the conductor to check the train or connecting the back device. Are the slidding long enough?

First they are not worried about siddings if they build them this long, and why is it hard for the conductor to check the train? and connecting the EOT is not a problem, plus that is done by the carmen at initial terminal.

I can see walking the train being a problem, yes the EOT is put on at Terminals, but what if something happened and the conductor had to walk the train, all 3 1/2 miles of it, throw in the summer time temps in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California and then you might have a problem. Siddings could also become a problem and dispatchers can get lazy by letting trains over shoot siddings. Things like this happen on Tehachapi every now and again, and when it does things can be balled up for hours.

Wether this test train is a success, once the idea of such long trains exist, it is probably better to test a train for train handling BEFORE the huge cost of building longer sidings.
