I am friends with a fellow modeler who had his layout featured in Model Railroader including the cover photo. I wonder why MR hasn’t been knocking on my door to take pictures of my layout? After all, I know someone…but I haven’t been featured. [:-^]

If ya dont like the Mag, dont subscribe to it!!! Booooo Hooooooo Kevin
Most average Joes with medium size layouts couldn’t write their way out of a paper bag and their layout photos are barely worthy of the family photo album let alone a world wide magazine.Wouldn’t make for very good sales.(I include myself in this group)
Even if they had a special addition with just those average layouts, someone would be making a dumb post saying “I’m tired of buying a magazine that only shows layouts I could build myself.”
And that’s the truth. Good night…and good news…
I enjoy writing articles for model railroad magazines. Most articles go to a magazine in the UK called Model Trains International. I don’t get money for the articles they publish, its just fun for me to do. A few of my articles have been published in MR, mainly because they cover a broader area for model railroading projects.
From time to time, smaller layouts that are built by average people instead of ex-commercial artists (April issue), but it is somewhat of a rare appearence. I don’t really care though, because I get some good ideas and enjoy seeing and reading about the layouts, and it gives to something to aim for. The MR mag has never really failed in having at least one article that interests me, so if you don’t like the feature layouts, go to the DCC corner article or product reviews or something else, because the mag isn’t built off of featured layouts. I have noticed this trend, not only in Model Railroader, but in other model railroading magazines. Although I’m one of those 50+, not overweight however, that loves the steam era, I’ve noticed lot of articles on kitbashing, scratch building, layouts, etc, assumes you either own or have access to a machine shop or know a lot of renowned modelers who are more than happy to make or supply you with the obscure parts necessary for the project. For example, “My friend made the (insert part names) on his lathe.” Most of us “regular modelers” neither know renowned modelers nor have access to those resources and have to rely on either commercial products or making alterations to products using common tools. Although having experienced modeling friends with access to different resources is very helpful, I wish more articles would be more inclusive of us "regular modelers.
