Hi, everyone. I was just thinking that we should post questions, stories and news about MSTS and Trainz here, instead of going to all the trouble to sign on to another forum. Shall we start? Or will this linger and die…
Matthew
Sounds ok to me - anyone have any questions? I’ve spent a few hours twiddling with config files over the months since I bought my copy.
Well, I’ve been having a few problems with patches, where do I put trainsets, like the California Zephyr?
I was just waiting to make sure Bergie didn’t veto it, or if people didn’t like it.
Matthew
The trainsets are a bit complex - basically you have to have the directories for the cars/locos in the “trains” folder, then create a consist using them which will be in the “consists” folder - when you run Train Sim the consist can be found by selecting the lead loco from the drop-down menu then looking through the menu below that (I have one called “F7s and Streamliners” for an ABBA set and a streamline consist with dome cars).
yeah i just posted about 2 days ago about freeware
WWW.TRAIN-SIM.COM FOR EVERYBODY THAT DOESN’T KNOW, IT’S REALLY GOOD.
whoops, caps…
So I put them in the “Trains” folder, not “trainsets” or “Consists”?
Matthew
How do I make consists?

Go to the activities editor, choose a new activity, then go into the player thing and choose new consist and put in the things you want. I know that’s not precise, but it will have to do on my part…
I’m having trouble adding a new route. I’m trying to put on “Bear mountain pass” from railserve.com, and I’ve foolowed these instructions to the letter:
Unzip BMP5.zip into a temp folder. Then copy and past the BMP_5 folder into the MSTS Routes
folder. You must then run the batch file located in the BMP_5 folder.
That’s it, enjoy!
But I’m not enjoying…it isn’t there…
Also, what do i do for the train-sim.com ones that are spanne zip files?
Matthew
WHOAH! I just tried to do the California Zephyr, and did all the readme told me to, then it said “Error getting the clipoard data” about 20 times, then it said “Train simulator now needs to close”
WHAT HAPPENED?
It’s not as bad as when I tried to do those IC SD70s that apparantly require something else, I gpt 55 error messages( I counted) and then my computer crashed!
is it my operating system being a jerk again? (Windows 98 ver. II)
Matthew
P.S. See, this is why I started this thread, I have so many questions…
I’m running some North Shore cars on the Canadian L&SD line if I got that right
but I want a trublue North Shore line and South Shore…
guess I gotta makem…
Well, my computer a splode.
I tried it again, and this time I asked for an error report, then my computer froze, and I had to reboot. What do I do?!!
I got my consist running. Thanks for the help.

Wow, I just drove my first train DOWN Kicking Horse Pass. I’ve driven a few up, but never down. Talk about nerve wracking! I was on the edge of my seat the whole way down as I piloted the CP Canadian of 1968. I got down fine, but encountered a restrictive signal east of Field. Then I reloaded from a save point, threw her into run 8, and you can guess the rest!
Matthew
P.S. you can get about 1/2 of Maple Leaf Track’s Kicking Horse Pass route free at the CPR corporate website, www.cpr.ca . They also have a few goos engines, from the 1955 Canadian to 2816 to CP SD90s and GP38ACs.
Apparetly, sometimes just the act of me opening it is an Illegal Operation. What do I do?!!
Matthew
“Illegal Operation” is Windows-speak for “oops, another bug - quick, tell the user something serious-sounding and maybe they’ll give up”. These unhelpful error messages are a pet hate of mine - telling the user that something is an “Illegal Operation” gives them no help whatsoever with fixing the problem. Best quote I heard was “Illegal Operation? It makes it sound like my PC flew to Rio and took out someone’s kidney!”[(-D]
I’ve noticed that they seem to come up more often when running short of RAM - check what else is running in the background. I used to get that message all the time from some programs until I added another 256mb RAM module. I’ve had some bits of MSTS refuse to play at all (like the “diesel locos” menu in the consist editor - when I try to access it I get dumped out of the program for some reason with no advice on what the problem is, all the other loco and car menus work perfectly apart from the diesel one). Good luck!
I have a question! How do you gets new locomotives and consists onto the game? I have them downloaded, but I am stuck.
Unzip them and put them into the trainsets folder, I think, then check the readme for further instructions. Then go into the activities editor and pick New under player service, then click new consist.
Now, why do only a few of my downloads show up…where are those GN Fs…why are there only NP Fs…
Matthew
Yep - you need to create a new directory and subdirectories in the “trainsets” folder, then put the files you’ve downloaded into it. Try opening up one of the original directories and take a look at how it’s all fitted together - just be careful not to alter anything. Any consist (.con) files can be put into the “Consists” folder - these will show up in the loco menu in “explore route” mode.
my California Zephyr .con files don’t show up anywhere, no matter where I put them. Maybe I should join an MSTS forum after all…
Matthew
Hmm - do you get any error messages when you start MSTS? If not, are you looking in the right place in the menu - look under the listing for the loco you’re hauling it with.
