The need for a Intermodal Terminal At Binghamton NY

Well today I gave a short talk at City Hall there during a city Consel meeting…
I told them that Binghamton is blessed with 3 railroads and at least 12 trains a day. Intermodals go thru do crew changes and get fuel but do not drop off cars there. Logistacaly it seems to make sence
I am trying to convince them that if there Port Authority or Empire Zone would build a Intermodal yard and have a free trade zone that would create jobs here.
Why there is not one already with 3 railroads and 6 intermadal trains a day reamains a mystery…Perhaps its NYs high taxes…

Don’t be worri’in about how many railroads Binghamton’s got, be worri’in about the shippers and receivers - you gotta load intermodal both ways - where’s it gonna go, how much of it is there, what’s it pay?

You are going to justify having a squad of mechanical inspectors, a piggy-packer at minimum plus paving and a herd of draymen just lying around waiting for a car that may or may not come? Listen to greyhound and Robin Williams ( Reality - what a concept!)[(-D][(-D][(-D]

TT here is a professional study take a look at it for ideas

Binghamton isn’t that far from the New York metro area or Buffalo. It would probably be cheaper to truck containers from those points than for intermodal trains to make a stop there for a handful of containers.

Does the doctor know you’re using a computer again?

If New York state hadn’t managed to kill off or drive away all the industry on the Southern Tier, Binghamton might be a good location for an intermodal terminal. But, since there is no industry or employement in the region, whose gonna ship into or out of the area?

NS has ramps at every little city in the southeast because there is real economic activity there.

Why no ramp for Binghamton? The same reason Mohawk Carpet is now in Dalton GA.

IIRC there is an intermodal facility at Dewitt on CSX. That’s just 90 minutes away from Bingotown, right down I-81.

Could a Intermodal Terminal be a economic incentive? When coupled with a
free trade zone and Empire Zone?
On the other hand are new cargo airports a ecommomic incentive…
Yes Sryrscuse is 90 min away but how much money would we save on were and tear on highways?
Could we get NYS Thruway to pay for a intermodal terminal?

Terminal Tower,

After reading your Favorite Quote, I can understand a little better how you could be so “bold” as to suggest such a thing. I whole heartedly agree with your quote, but your suggestion really seems to be far fetched. No matter.

My real question is, given that your location is cited as Cleveland, OH — how is it that you are addressing the Binghamton, NY city council? Just curious.

With more intermodal traffic and fewer boxcars…detective_kissmypeterfinder22 needs the rail traffic to go where he wants to go…

As noted above by the capable Mr. Tree there is indeed an intermodal ramp at Dewitt Yard just outside of Syracuse. NS has a ramp in Buffalo at Bison Yard. There is also a major NS intermodal ramp to the south in Allentown and several ramps in NJ all competing for the NYC metro area business. Indeed, CSX has considered closing the ramp at Dewitt due to inadequate business. Also, with the NS leasing the Delaware Division to CNY (NYSW) traffic to the east of Binghamton is more sporadic and still subject to interference from NJT. There is no significant industry in the Binghamton area and what traffic could be served there from local sources and Scranton/Wilkes Barre is served by the NS ramp at Allentown/Bethlehem, CP at Taylor (Wilkes Barre) or NS at Harrisburg. Simply, there is no need for such a ramp in Binghamton which lost its major industries (shoe manufacturing, IBM, GAF. Singer-Link and Tobacco) decades ago.

Well BING. is at the juntion of two major Highways 17 and 89…
Whike Bing may not hve enough traffic remember that most intermodal traffic comes from a 190 raduis of a terminal

As mentioned above there are several operating terminals already struggling within that radius of Binghamton. The number of trains has nothing to do with it. Remember 25K the intermodal that NS ran up from Croxton? It had a small Bison block and the rest were almost all EMPTIES returning west. So, just because you see a train doesn’t mean there is traffic on it…

If my eyes are working OK, my atlas says that Binghamton is in Boone County, NY which is listed with a population of 200,000. Chances are that there is a fair movement of ex rail vans of merchandise into the area, but given the low level of manufacturing in the area, probably very little outbound tonnage. I’d be willing to bet a lunch that the out of balance situation could get some very low cartage rates for any business with some outbound tonnage to the area rail ramps. If empties are going back anyway, a trucker might be happy to go for fuel money.

I think folks have missed the NS ramp at Taylor PA , which is only 50 miles south. WIth NS that close to the south and CSX less than 100 miles north, I don’t think they’d add a ramp.

Not exactly. Binghamton is located in Broome County, NY. It is one of the triple cities. Binghamton’s population has greatly shrunk in the past few years. Population in the City of Binghamton itself is down to less than 50,000 souls. Johnson City and Endicott make up another 60,000 or so and Vestal across the river is about another 25,000 or so. There is not a lot coming or going in the area. Rail freight traffic in the area is largely non-intermodal. There are some large distribution centers in the Kirkwood area that are involved in restaurant food which is 100% truck in and out in company fleets. NS was rumored to be looking at an intermodal ramp in Binghamton or Elmira after the Conrail acquisition but neither has happened to date.

Dan, he is actually being halfway good this time. [8D]

He must be taking his meds on schedule. [}:)]

Actually, Binghamton is at the junction of Interstate 81 (N/S) and I-86/NYS Rte 17 (E/W). There is no major source of traffic within the radius of 200 miles that would justify such a terminal/

Just consider the source. Think back a year or so. [;)]

Remember the “story” in which you and Ed were major players. [:D]
