The new athearn BNSF and CP box cars make me sick

Hey, I’ll be right behind you with Penn Central steam! In fact, I’ve been thinking of doing a Conrail K4… now, do I get the MTH or the BLI??? Which one will look better in blue?

Dave Vollmer;

I’m not sure exactly how old you are but if you are old enough to remember the early ‘70s and you were involved in model railroading at that time then you probably remember the "controversy "which “erupted” over the issue of a Walthers’ ad for Penn Central steam locomotive decals.

I was stationed with the Air Force at Sembach in Germany at the time so I remember when this took place; MR mag was, at that time, spasming on an “ethics in advertising” issue and they had pulled somebodies chain who questioned the “ethics” of the Walthers ad since there had never been a Penn Central steam locomotive. This “controversy” lasted for a couple of months in “Letters to the Editor” and then, as is true with most “controversies”, it died a natural, lingering death - Bruce Walthers defended his company’s reputation with a sort of “op-ed” piece explaining that Walthers intended no deception with their ad, rather the company was respnding to specific request from clients.

I never see a question raised on the authenticity of something but what I don’t remember this little “controversy” of 35 years ago and that is the reason I referenced Penn Central steam locomotive decals and Walthers. The presence of a steam locomotive with Penn Central decaled on the tender might cause me to put my tongue into my cheek but it’s your railroad and you can do as you please, even to the point of running bright red boxcars with roof walks lettered for BNSF. CUTE, MAN!!!; CUTE!!!

I’m 32 actually… and a 10-year (and counting) Air Force veteran (OIF 2003). There are quite a number of us blue-suiters here! As for the Conrail K4 I guess I should have put the little winking icon…[;)]…there! That one! I’m not a rivet counter, but I do try to be authentic to PRR paint schemes and practices of July 1956. I did hear about the PC steam thing once upon a time; my f

Mike,What upsets me about these high dollar car boo-boos is the instant research we have at our finger tips today…One doesn’t need to be a advance modeler to see some of the mistakes in painting and lettering on cars or engines.

My question is if a average modeler can catch these mistakes just by checking a on line photo then why can’t the manufacturers? My only possible answer lays with the foreign contract jobbers and a break down in language translation concerning car type.

Still I find it inexcusable.

I desperately need an Amtrak Big Boy. I want to run super long passenger trains in my Catskill Mountian desert line. It’s got to be in Phase III or II. Thanks bunches.
