It looks like Firecrown finally shut down the old Kalmbach forums overnight.
Rich
I was waiting for that to happen before I removed the site from my Bookmarks Bar. Good bye old friend. LOL.
I’m going to (not) miss those 504 gateway timeout errors.
Rich
They have said several times the old Forums were to be closed down.
David
Yeah, supposedly that was going to occur on January 15th, but it looks like it got a start of execution for two weeks.
Rich
Used my old bookmark and it brought me here.
Using this forum now is so much better than the old one. It’s too bad we (the forum) lost a lot of good model railroad people who probably won’t come back here.
One thing I really like is the ease of moving between the different forums. There are some great posts on the Classic Toy Trains and the Garden Railways forums that I probably would have missed in the old system.
I agree with on both points.
All of the former Kalmbach forums have lost a lot of members who have not returned to experience these new forums.
Yes, the ease of moving between the different forums is a great improvement. Plus, the visual impact of seeing posts from different forums on one screen.
Rich
While Firecrown has “shut down” the old forum, it can still be accessed, and the old threads can be replied too. The best of both worlds.
“The King is dead, long live the King!”
Cheers, the Bear.
I had a tab for cs.trains.com/mrr/f/default When I refreshed it this afternoon, the new forum came up. So I don’t see how one would get to the old version.
I also got the new forum when using my old forum bookmark - tried that just after getting an email with Rich’s posting to the Classic Trains forum.
I think I started reading the forums in 2003 or '04, joined in December 2005, probably have 5,000 or so posts under my two handles - lost access to the first when my old e-mail address went defunct.
I should have been more precise. Either knowing the thread or using the “New” Forums search function, threads on the “Old” forum can be viewed, resurrected, and replied to.
Here’s a link to one from April 23…

Has any progress been made?
Cheers, the Bear.
Ah. I understand now.
Firecrown took a snapshot of the old forum in August and imported the data into the new forum. Most of the data survived. So we can get to the older stuff.
As for the layout, no progress. It’s still “Plywood Plains” onbthe dining room table.
Yes, you should have been, Bear.
i wouldn’t say the old forums are gone. All the old threads are still available.
it’s the forum software accessing those threads that’s been replaced
True, but the old format would be missing.
Be careful, though: I notice quite a few older threads are missing some content at the end…

Yes, some posts are truncated. This was addressed by Craig Fuller.
