The paint won't stick!

I am trying to airbrush a athearn box car it is light yellow and I want to paint it mineral brown. I washed the car good let it dry good the paint I am using is a water washup paint ready to use but I did add some water to it.The psi. is about 40 and the paint runs down the sides doe’s not stay on too much paint air or a primer should be used ? I don’t know just learning. rambo1…

Rattle can primer all plastic/styrene kits etc. before doing any kind of painting is my [2c]

Matt

What type of car is it. And 40PSI is way to high in my book (15 to 20 PSI is enough ). Also spraying a primer on first is a good idea.

Mike

What is rattle can primer can auto primer do/

It is a athearn 50 ft.and can you airbrush auto primer? Just asking!

Any kind of cheap spray can primer you can buy at Kmart or Wallyworld will do fine. I use either white or gray depending on what my final color is to be.

Matt

go to either home depot or lowes and get a can of spray primer for plastic. if you cant find it ask the sale person where it would be located and let them know what your doing with it. if you can find it in a spray can i suggest 1-2-3 primer/sealer.

At 15-20psi. have trouble for the paint to flow properly.

Mr. Rambo - I can barely understand your post. Would you please, in the future, try to use punctuation and better grammar??

Many Thanks, Jimmy

First off you are using too much air pressure. About 15-25p.s.i. is all you really need. Could also check you are not getting moisture into the airhose or pinched airhose.

Another thing I’d also do is to lightly rub with a fine 1500 grit paper after it is primered–a primer can will work here—so that there is a bit more tooth so the paint will grip better.

I use 25 to 30psi.

Try mixing the paint 50/50 with rubbing alcohol. It’ll dry nice and fast.

Also don’t try to cover in one pass. Apply several light coats.

From what I can make of the original post I may have some suggestions. The original paint that Athearn used is a glossy finish. This does not have much “tooth” for the next layer of paint to stick to. As was mentioned in some previous posts, a light coat of primer is in order. A “sandable” automotive primer done is several very light, almost dry, passes will help with this problem. Don’t spray it on heavy as the lacquer base of the primer may cause the paint to lift.

Can I ask why you thinned the paint you were using? Thinning paint only needs to be done when the viscosity is not proper for the pressure and temperature you are spraying under. This may very well have caused some of the problem. Another tip is to spray several wery light, again almost dry" coats to build up a bit of color and help get some “tooth” for the subsequent layers. 40 PSI is nt realy that much pressure when spraying water based paints. I use about that much when spraying acrylics and have no problems. I find that I need to turn down the paint flow out of the gun to get good results. When I use a lower pressure I don’t seem to get good atomization.

Another tip…The best way to repaint cars/engines is to strip the original paint. This way a light primer coat and new paint will be the only layers on the car. You may find that after you paint this car the original lettering will still besomewhat detectable under the new paint.

Keep practicing and good luck, Dan

Primer really needs to be sprayed before a coat of paint can be added. Just don’t go overboard with it, just a very light coat is all you need. Sand down any imperfections you see and then spray your paint. 15 psi is all you need but you know your gun better then we do. Maybe try cutting back the psi a little and practise on some old junk first.

Jimmy, not everyone can use punctuation and grammer as well as you do. Keep the complaining to yourself.

Many thanks, Dave

I use Tamiya gray spray-can paint as a primer, their cans have a finer spray than most other spray-can paint so you can get a very good result from it.

If by “water wash-up paint” you mean an acrylic paint like Badger’s, they generally don’t require thinning out to use with an airbrush. Make sure the paint is shaken or stirred so it is thoroughly mixed.

When airbrushing, you want the paint to be just starting to dry when it hits the model.

HEY JIMMY didn’t know this was a english class? rambo1…

Mr. Rodgiers,

Instead of helping with the question, Jimmy has to give a return reply telling him about his grammier. You have got to be kiddinig me. You didn’t even help him then complanine about his spellig. Next time don’t reply if thats all you can say.

Mike

Rambo: I’m with you - all you wanted was some advice, not criticism.

Sorry, folks, but when someone asks for help here, it’s much easier to answer their request if it doesn’t first need to be translated into a legible form of English. While it’s true that Jimmy didn’t answer the

Wayne, what if the person really doesn’t understand proper grammer and how to use punctuation and has a hard time spelling? I had a friend who was in his early 70’s, had a grade 5 education and who was a farmer that relied on his wife for anything that related to writing. I was at his place talking about this forum as well as Ebay awhile ago and convinced him to check it out. Now this guy never touched a computer in his life but I taught him how to basically use it and his wife and grand kids helped out whenever they were around. After a few posts on this forum he was rediculed by a number of members because of his lack of spelling and punctuation. People could understand his post, just like the original poster in this thread but still people chose to redicule him instead of answering a simple question. Well guess what? He hasn’t been back. Everybody on this forum that just has to point out a spelling mistake or a grammer problem in a post really need to get over themselves. Not everybody has the education or sometimes even the mental skills to be perfect like all you guys. I can name a few posters that constantly make errors in their posts but nobody jumps on them. Another regular poster here suffered from a head injury and sometimes their posts needed to be read a few times to understand it but so what? Who cares? I don’t and neither should anyone else. If you can’t read or understand someones post then stroll on, nobody wants to read about you not being abl

[sigh]I was watching this thing develop with a touch of dismay----[sigh]

My sister has something that is frequently seen now as a learning disability—it is called dyslexia. It is a brain related disorder that involves sight and sometimes a host of other issues. Her spelling can be ‘atrocious’ at times–depending on how tired she is or whether she ate enough or what have you. I sometimes have to work a little harder at understanding what it is she wrote me. Now, the OP, in this case, was perfectly understandable from where I sit—I just wish some of us would become a little more maturer about these things-----we are NOT all essentially THE SAME. Hence some of us may have to work a little harder at understanding others-----

The problem is that as in any other anonymous form of communication we simply do not know the circumstances that other person is having. And with that we are making rather simplistic conclusions/assumptions that may not be true. There are these other issues around so let us be a little less jumpy about the spelling/grammer here-----we are not in high school or such[:-^]
