The Penn Central/ Conrail H39B Hopper.

Hey Guys,

Went to the hobby shop today and found a new little BB kit, and I thought It was really cool. Now since I model the 1990’s, penn central equipment would be pretty rusty and beat up. I want to weater this car to a 1990’s appearance. I found one picture close to my hopper, which was taken in 1988

Here is my railcar.

How would i do this?

Your major problem is this is a blue box kit, it means it is an old MDC kit, and therefore it is not an H39 car. The only H39 kit is made by Bowser (Ex - Stewart). Count the number of panels in your picture and the number on the car. The car is closest to a Southern prototype.

Watch Athearn cars, they will paint them in any scheme to sell without regard if the the railroad owned the car or not.

Even though it may not be a 100% historically accurate version of an actual CONRAIL/Penn Central car I would say look for pictures of similar equipment of that age and base your weathering on that.

Obviously there are a couple schools of thought on how you can do this. One you could dry brush floquil rust on the ribs, airbrush on Floquil Dust, and hit it with dullcoat. Another method I like more is use weathering powders and seal it with the Testor’s clear flat spraypaint.

A great source of weathering information is the forum on modeltrainsweathered.com.
