The Penn Lake System - Layout Tour

Someday I’ll have a website, but until then here’s a short tour of my layout.

The Penn Lake System is a 1970s regional line co-owned by the Reading and Delaware & Hudson. I model the Mountain Division’s Bourbon River Sub, centered around the fictional town of Plaster Falls in Pennsylvania’s Anthracite region. Plaster Falls itself, and the surrounding industries, were inspired by Phoenixville and the surrounding area.

Due to both road’s fondness for Alcos and the fact that I’m an Alco-holic, the PLS’s roster is almost entirely Alco RSs and C424s. All are Atlas products painted for Reading and D&H. The Line handles heavy coal traffic, as well as building products, stone, cement, and paper from New England and Canada. There is also an interchange with the PRR.

Wow, your layout appears to be coming along prety nicely. I remember seeing pictures of the tower there in Y when you first got it finished. Looking good man. The bottom picutre looks really rood. Nice job on the track.

Thanks John. A little paint and ballast, and you’ll never tell that it’s Atlas code 100 flex track.

Right on! I admit though, I am fan of Code 100. I just wish they offered more of a selection of swtiches and such as they do in 83.

nice layout if you dont mind me asking what,s the size of it im new to this and having a lot of trouble

getting a track plan started

the reason im askin about the size of your layout is mine is shaped almost like yours without the yard

i didnt want you tothink im tryin to copy yours

Dave, [#welcome]

Overall, the layout is 11’ x 17’. The main section, without the wye or yard is 10’ x 12’. The yard is a little longer, because it fits into an alcove next to the door.

Because, I prefer collecting rolling stock, and building scenery, I used a simple open track plan. I also planned for the large industrial buildings early on.

The yard tracks will hold an eight car train with a caboose and locomotive. I could have also squeezed in a longer mainline run if I eliminated the wye, but the wye junction is a central scene to layout.

Feel free to use any aspects of my plan that you like.
