I believe that picture was printed in local newspapers.
Stuff happens.
Given the flooding problems experienced in the Mohawk valley in that time frame, I’m not sure how CSX acquiring part of Conrail has anything to do with the incident.
“Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato tells media outlets two trains going in opposite directions on parallel tracks apparently side-swiped each other.”
The “side-swipe” aspect - if correct - is unusual. Presuming that this didn’t happen at an interlocking (where a side-swipe would be akin to a partial collision, where one train went beyond its authority to operate, etc.), Such a side-swipe usually occurs where the roadbed has settled or subsided so much that the trains lean into each other. Also unusual is that occurs only when the middle part of the roadbed has settled more than the outer parts. More common is when the outer edge of the embankment slumps, and that would cause the trains to lean away from each other.
No cover up here…what happened has been reported openly and quite fairly, too. A washout caused a train to derail in the face of another train so there was first a derailment and then a collision. Nothing suspicious or untoward on CSX’s part…no need for accusations nor alarm.
Certainly appears to be the case. But no one is saying: a. wait until the STB investigation is complete nor b. no one (except the OP, maybe. hard to tell what he is saying) is speculating about sabotage or terrorism. But the horrible accident a week ago has produced: c. all of the above…
Maybe because everyone and their half-brother hasn’t been throwing out wild accusations about the Mohawk wreck? Or trying to reinvent the wheel because of it? And tons of civilians weren’t killed in the NY wreck, either. But yeah, I’d like to see the investigation results. I always do.
