Was just out taking some pictures of our Polar Express train (details in caption)
I was wondering, what other railroads do this. I mean obviously CP, CSX, KCS etc, but what about smaller roads and museums. How many go to the lengths we do? Post all the pictures and info here! Im very interested in seeing what railroads come up with!
The Polar Express trips run by the Adirondack Scenic Railroad start selling out in August, and were completely sold out in early November.
We carry about 350 on each train, and make a half hour (13 mile) journey from Utica Union Station to the “North Pole” where a lucky child gets the first gift of Christmas, as in the story. On the return trip Santa visits with each child (actually three Jolly Old Elves each cover two cars) and gives them a bell. On returning to Utica Union Station the riders are treated to hot chocolate and cookies.
Elves are present on the train, as well, to help entertain and occupy the riders.
We play a reading of “Polar Express” on the way north (literally) which finishes just before we arrive at North Pole Station (the village office, located in the former station, suitably decorated).
If I did the math right, we’re running 33 trips this year. I’ll be working around half of them, mostly as a student conductor. All uniformed train crew on the train generally carry oil RR lanterns, as can be seen in some of the linked photos from the local paper. The lanterns really help set the mood, too.
