Hi
I was wondering how long it will take csx to pick up a hopper that derailed. It was still down today I noticed it last weekend. It was an I&O train but it derailed on CSX track.according to a rr worker CSX is just going to scrap the car.and the transfer track is still out of service.any thoughts?

Good question. If the car will be scrapped it could be there a while.

man, and i thought the government was slow
I agree that if its going to be scrapped then it could be there a while!
Two options, one CSX has to haul in their dozers, and lifting equipment, and a flatcar in which to load the hopper. Getting all of the peices together will take time, expecially if a contractor is hired to do part of it.
Option two, (the way that I usually see it done). Assuming that the scrapper can get to the car then they may just leave it there until that guy finally decides to show. Again, its his time table and if he has other work its not like the car’s going anywhere…
On a related note. I once watched a guy scrap an entire covered hopper in less than a day with nothing more than a torch and a forklift. It was quite impressive! So I guess the anwser is that this seems to be a low priority on everybody’s list so don’t hold your breath.
Just read an article on scrap metal prices saying the have sky rocketed in the last 6 months. Scrap iron going from $70 a ton to $160. Aluminum and others also at multiyear highs. Maybe it won’t take so long now. Either that or Joe-you could out your torch and rent a forklift.
I wish I was in the scrap business at $160 per ton…sounds like it will be scrapped by the way [:D].
If it’s going to be scrapped don’t hold your breath. There was a loaded coal porter on a siding in Shelby, NC that they had a broken drawbar. It sat there for three weeks before it was repaired and moved.

The lading may be the issue - what’s in it??? If it’s in the clear and not blocking normal movements, it might be there a while…Especially if it’s one of the classic “let’s shove 26 cars in a 20 car track…oops!” scenarios where the wheelstops or track bumper got attacked… (Those mistakes get left there a while to bruise ego’s on that crew that did it)

yo mudchicken, we had a derailment in the yard here and a B23-7 set there for 15 days before they rerailed it [:D]. I was trying to shop it anyway.
Well the hopper is still there.and CSX has set out some more cars on the transfer track for the elevator.2 workers were working on a frozen switch so who knows when the hopper will be rerailed or scrapped.
