The Roundhouse, Episode 4

Hal mentioned a few of the “classic era” railfan photographers, Link, Perry, and Steinheimer. I’d like to name a couple of other great ones, Robert Hale and Stan Kistler. Stan, especially, is a master of several genres, producing crystal-clear roster shots, dramatic action views, and human-interest scenes of railroaders at work with equal facility and integrity. Stan is best known for shooting in Southern California, especially the Santa Fe but also the SP and UP. He sometimes got farther afield, as we can appreciate in his recent article featuring steam on the UP in Wyoming in “Classic Trains” magazine.

After watching all four episodes, is clear I’d like the rounds to be 3 minutes instead of 2. Two minutes seems just too short to develop the answer from two people.

Enjoyed watching this. I like that I’m not the only younger railfan who still shoots slides (although since my local camera shop closed, I’ve been doing more digital). What kind of camera and film does Cody shoot. I use a Pentax K1000 loaded with Fujichrome.

Your “what railroad would you like to go back and photograph?” question intrigued me. For me, it would be the L & N. My interest in trains goes back to my granddad who worked for “The Old Reliable” from 1908 to 1959. Fifty one years of service and I don’t know of a single photo of him connected with the railroad. I would love to go back for a day or two and follow him around with a camera.

And regarding paint schemes, the best ever in my mind was the old dark blue and cream L&N passenger livery.

Like Drew I have one that is not that far back (amazingly 24 years this May to be exact). That would be Conrail. My family moved up to Western New York from DC in 95 and even at a young age(five) I had the privilege of seeing many pre-CSX roads on their system. After the move I saw little to no NS and a decent amount of Conrail either in and around Buffalo or between Salamanca and Binghamton. However I was in no ways a serious railfan or knew the value of pictures at the time. It was not until seven years after the break up that I got involved in the hobby, and even then much of the Conrail engines and equipment were either repainted or were(and still are in some cases) on their last legs. Thankfully, I do have some shots taken from the middle-end of the last decade with Conrail engines on CSX or NS (mostly the latter). As for Buffalo, CSX got most of it and the surrounding region (NS got Binghamton), and I am fine with that: as they are my favorite road. Unfortunately the diversity in region, paint schemes and various other demographics is sadly all gone.

Fine Roundhouse Gentlemen.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear Drew was an FEC fan. I am soon to start my latest layout here in S, IL. It will be based on the 2007/2008 FEC. I am a FL native. Not many FEC fans in the area.
Thanks
