Today’s Philadelphia Daily News reports that a mile-long CSX container train, filled with New York City garbage, has been sitting on the former B&O tracks in the heart of downtown for well over 24 hours, baking in the sun. It’s on the east bank of the Schuyulkill, opposite 30th St. Station.
CSX reports the train was bound for points south but was halted due to flooding around Richmond.
Worse, the train sits across a street crossing heavily used by joggers and cyclists for access to the waterfront park. They are apparently crawling under and around the cars.
They should use enclosed containers for that-I am assuming that they use thoes open top containers with a tarp over them. Honestly if I had my way, I would make them use a modified enclosed and air tight woodchip gondola. I know that ECDC Environmental uses thease types of cars. Incidentally for reference, their number series is ECXX 94501-94550. Those are the ones I know about.
I believe NS has some enclosed trash hoppers too but I don’t know their number series other than I have seen two-NS 195837 and 195840.
I remember back in the late 80s early 90s when one garbage train was crawling all over the place because no one wanted it. I remember it got caught in a hurricane which split all the tarps and that did no good thing for the smell. I think it wandered around for a month or so. There was also a barge of garbage that had the same thing happen.
Is it there because it is stuck or because no one wants it?
CSX says it is there because of high water to the south. The upcoming hurricane isn’t going to help that.
That wandering barge of garbage, by the way, was Philadelphia’s.
The Poo Poo Choo Choo was it’s name.Don’t know what happened to it,but Chessie System parked it in the Patapsco State Park on Avalon siding for a few months.WWHHEEEEWWWW!!Smelly!!!

While the Richmond flooding is a convinent excuse…the real reason the train reamined in Philadelphia for over 24 hours was engine failures.
The city of Vallejo Ca. ships their garbage to some place in Idaho in regular shipping containers every 2 weeks.
A few years back I saw a southbound CSX “garbage train” pass through Alexandria, VA. All the “freight” cars had Waste Management logos on them. Would this be an earlier version of the same train? I had assumed it was from Washington, DC {because of the train’s location; not being a wise guy here}
Anyone know where New York City’s garbage is loading into these trains? It must be a filthy operation, yet the train leaves clean and sealed.
In the 1990’s, as the court imposed closing date of Staten Island’s (NYC) huge Fresh Kills landfill was approaching, a plan was devoloped to barge the garbage across the Arthur Kill to Linden, NJ (where I grew up).
The barges were to enter a huge, enclosed building, to be built at one of Linden’s closed chemical plants. Inside, the garbage would be transfered into sealed containers for rail (Conrail’s Chemical Coast Secondary) or truck ( a special access road was to built to the NJ Turnpike [I-95] to avoid additional truck traffic in town). And off to landfills in Ohio, West Virginia, etc the garbage would go. The residents of Linden were assured that they would smell absolutely nothing, and would see not one piece of garbage on the land or in the water. Beaucoup tax dollars would be generated for the City of Linden.
The plan crashed and burned as corruption charges started flying in different directions.

This one rolls through DC daily in the afternoon. Pretty sure it is DC garbage, trucked to somewhere in Maryland, then shipped out to virginia. The containers it is in look fully enclosed.
CSX is among the trashiest of railroads.
Trash is moved from the New York metropolitan area to points in Southern Virginia and the Carolinas,
There is a movement from a trash collection center near Jessup, MD to Sealston, VA.
There is a movment from Rockville, MD to Dickerson, MD.
And these just scratch the trashy surface.
