The longest train the world has ever seen has just been assembled in Port Headland in Western Australia it was 7.53 Km ( about 4 1/2 miles) long and was pulled by 8 diesel locos. This is not a thing of the past but it all happened in 2005. It is an iron ore train and it automatically unloads into a bulk ore carrier 50 metres across and longer than the Eiffel Tower is high.

On June 21, 2001, BHP Iron Ore had to get some iron ore from their mines at Newman and Yandi to the ship at Port Hedland in Western Australia. There was a fair bit to carry and to avoid making too many trips they assembled a 7.353 km long train consisting of 682 ore carriages which took 8 powerful diesel-electric locomotives to get things moving.

Mark i bow to your superior knowledge I only saw it on Sunrise and assie good morning show, doing the weather from Port Headland.

I’m visualizing myself sitting at a crossing watching this behemoth pass in front of me and wondering just how many ore cars in a row I could count before I actually went into some kind of epileptic seizure.
Regardless, that is one big train. Longest train I’ve ever actually witnessed was 121 cars. This beast was 682!!!

And a road train of 79 trailers, wouldn’t like to step off the kerb in front of that. Imagine if that road train was on the crossing when that train was approaching, mmmm

Yea Kim those road train are quite incredible and illegal in most states of Australia as well. You can feel the ground rumble for a long way from the road and I have only seen small ones.
