---The Year in Railroading 2005 ---

O.K. I know I’m a little early but I could not wait.
We are within a week of the end of 2005 and I was thinking back on the last year of railroading. What are some of your most notable rail memories? Be it the steam excursion you went on, a derailment you saw, or a rare train you chased across the state, I would like to hear about it here.
For me the most notable was the UP Derailment at Galt, Illinois in early May. It happened in my area and I was able to get up close and photograph a lot of the wreck. Trains Magazine even published one of my pictures (September issue).

This derailment is what really got me into railfanning I just happened to meet some other trainspotters at the derailment site and they turned to on this forum.
I also had a very nice round trip on the Alaska Railroad this year that stands out as a high point, and then theirs the hike my brother & I took to the abandoned Winston Tunnel (CGW) near Galena Illinois. I had done a lot of reading about this tunnel, the men that built it, the trains that ran through it, and the interesting ventilation system it utilized. Standing at the west portal marveling at the fan house and all the work it took to make this tunnel, in the distance you could hear the trains blast their horns as they ran along the Mississippi on the BNSF Route to the Twin Cities. If you closed your eyes you would swear that the line was still in service.

But enough about my year how about yours, drag out the pictures and tell us about your year in railroading.

Ah… Good thread.

For me, that’s easy. My High Point of 2005 would be when my 5 year old son and I got to go for a short ride in (5-7 miles) in a GP. That was a moment that we will talk about until it gets passed onto the the grandkids. Even got video! But thats for us[;)]

Thsi year has been an incredible year. so many changes, and I have witnessed so many different aspects of railroading… and I cant wait to see what 2006 has in store!

Cab ride on the Adirondack Scenic.

I remember the one week in wisconsin where we had 3or4 accidents in voling CP trains
two of them where people were walking along the tracks and got hit by trains and the other one is where a car got stuck on the tracks and got hit by a WC train. Also back in April where the empire builder derailed by miller park. That’s about it that I can remember anyway.

Chris, you shoulda called me, we coulda gone railfanning together.
Defenatly getting my job on the railroad. It gives me valuable experience for when/if I go work for a freight railroad.
Also seeing a MRL SD45 in Duluth.

Well, I was NOT harrassed by any angry CSX employees. Some others actually apologized for their fellow employee! They know who their friends are.[;)] Otherwise, I finally rode the Conway Scenic Railway up into Crawford Notch! It was hot as all [}:)], but the open car was fine, with a pair of FP9s and[:p]567C talk on the way up the old MEC Mountain Division. I’ll be back there again![;)]

Pete, if you can, get up to the Conway Scenic for their Railfan’s Weekend, usually towards the end of October. The foliage is usually past peak, but still good. I haven’t made it up for a few years but the first time I went up for it, my wife and I sprung for the Notch Ride. We stopped for several run-bys and were out for almost nine hours.
This year my wife took me along to Colorado Springs for a convention and while there we went on three train rides - Royal Gorge, Cripple Creek, and Pike’s Peak Cog Railway. The weather was gorgeous and warm (except for on top of Pike’s Peak). I can’t wait for a chance to get back out there!
