They're All gone, All sold out! TLT's CN 4-8-4's that is

Was in my LHS yesterday and I was asking about the True Line Trains CN 4-8-4due next year. “They’re all sold out, all 1000 of them”.

Goes to show their is a market for Canadian Steam Engines.

So how many of our American friends bought one?

Fergie

Dunno, Fergie, but this engine wasn’t on my radar all along. I would have preferred a Selkirk 2-10-4, and would actively consider one if that should ever happen.

I know, I know

However it’s a start. I’ve been told TLT will be releasing more Canadiana in the not so distant future. So we will have to wait and see. Suprised that no one hasn’t done a Royal Hudson.

I seriously feel there is a big enough demand to make more than a 1,000 units, trick is to make the right Locomotive.

Fergie

The very knowledgable fellow at my LHS told me a couple of weeks ago that TLT was working on a CP 10 wheeler, likely a D10.

Now that is one that would put me on the list if they only build 1000!

It depends on how common the locos were on the CN and CP systems. CN did have a fleet of Northerns that were used in the central and perhaps eastern regions, so I’m not surprised that True Line Trains would make one. A CP D-10 (4-6-0, I believe?) was a fairly common loco on the system, so I wouldn’t be surprised if True Line Trains decides to produce one.

As for the oddball stuff - i.e. locos that were unique to a specific railway and manufactured in very small numbers - I don’t think we’ll ever see any of those in plastic. The only plastic models of rare locos that I can think of were Tyco’s Alco C-430 and Bachmann’s GE BQ23-7. And to this day I’m still stymied as to why those manufacturers chose those prototypes.

Well, I can think of a few…

[]Atlas RS32/36 (35 of one, 40 of the other)[]Proto 2000 DL109 (78 built)[]Rail Power Products C32-8 shell (10 built)[]True-Line Trains 5-axle C Liner (36 built)

Granted, the RPP shell was a bit of a DIY project, but it was easy to build and continuously available from RPP until the acquisition by Athearn.

The rest are larger numbers than the 10 BQ23s and 16 C430s, but still under a hundred units built, not to mention being operated by fewer roads than the C430 and for a shorter period. If you sniff around you’ll find lots of models of “oddball” engines. It seems that in many cases what was unpopular with railroads proves popular with railfans and modellers, specifically because it’s weird. [:)]

Sold out already? I’m glad I have one ordered and I hope we see more Canadian Steam from TLT.

How about:

Alco RS27 - 27 built.

EMD Model 40 - 6 or so built.

EMD SDL39 - 10 built (Kaslo Shops kit)

People just seem drawn to the oddball stuff.

B-Dubya,
Hey, long time no talk! How ya’ doin’?

Just to chime in on the P1K DL-109’s, you forgot the most obvious reason why they did it: the ATSF Warbonnet. It’s a pretty well worn rule of thumb that if you slap a red warbonnet on anything, it will sell. Now, the ATSF only had one DL-109, but it still counts.

Of course, the other major reason why they made it is because of the New Haven, a pretty popular road in it’s own right, had 60 of them. You also had the CNW, GM&O, SOU, RI and MILW which all had similar units. Sure, the DL-109 was a rare bird, but it was spread out over some pretty popular road names.

BTW, other oddball choices were the Erie Builts and any electric (GG-1, EF-4, Acela, HHP-8, AEM-7, ALP-44, etc.).

A D10…

Really[:-^]

I was sworn to secrecy

Gol-darn-it; missed it again!!! Can there be any life after this excruciating disappointment? Is there any possibility at all that there might be a second run? I would just love to be excruciatingly disappointed a second time!!! Keep the readership informed, please.

ATTN selector: this is NOT to be construed as any kind of an ad hominem attack!!!

It would be great if they decided to do some MLW units like M636s or M420Ws! I woudn’t mind having a CNR Northern but I would much rather have the locomotives that I remember passing my house.[:D]

Ok, so now we’re 2011 and TLT had some re an re to do on the 4-8-4 one of which was apparently weight distribution and traction… anyone pick up the latest version and be able to provide feedback… A local hobby shop here sent everyone back to TLT but problems were said to being addressed. Mike

Yep. Happens sometimes when they only take pre-orders or advanced orders or only produce a limited run.

Sometimes to get what you want, you really do have to place an advanced pre-order and wait on pins and needles for 6 mos., a yr, a yr and a 1/2 to get it.

Or wait by and hope that somebody has cancelled their order or that they decide to produce a few more for the shelves.

A member at our club here in Phx. just received his TLT 4-8-4…really beautiful looking engine and with dual sound decoders non the less, one in the engine and one in the tender ,Also the sound was recorded from a restored U2G , think thats what they are and sounded awesome. And yes the presentation book looked very nice.

And verrrry pricey for a plastic engine [:-^]

I ended up getting two of the pieces of crap, and I really do mean crap. For a loco that cost as much as it did I was so disgusted that I got suckered into buying them. I figured a Canadian company building a Canadian loco how could they go wrong? Both of mine went back and I got my money back. A few weeks ago I got a call that replacements were in and if I wanted two of them. I ended up getting two more after seeing them run at the hobby shop at a very discounted price and to be honest they still aren’t perfect but I can live with that. Maybe after they get some hours on them they will run great. Rapido’s Turbo train ran better after they got some run time on them so who knows. They are very beautiful locomotives, the detail is second to none and they will actually pull some cars now. The whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth and in the future I will never order another True Line locomotive until after I’ve seen it run. It’s going to take them a very long time to get customers to trust their products again. [U]

Dave

Dave,

I am interested in buying this loco and would be very appreciative if you could tell me where you got yours and, if I may be so bold, how much you paid. They aren’t stocked in the shops here in Winnipeg.

You could send me a PM if you would prefer.

CN Charlie

PM sent.

I recieved it and thanks!

A few years ago True Line manufactured a Dominion Atlantic Railway caboose. The run was limited to 100 cabooses. Was lucky enough to recently find one of them to go with my Proto 2000 Dominion Atlantic 6561 diesel. Now if I could just find a 6560 Dominion Atlantic diesel to go with it.

I understand that True Line is introducing an eight hatch refer this year.May try to pick up one of them.
