Thin Branch Series: Backdrops part 1 - basic hills
Thank you Jay for this introduction to painting scenery as a backdrop. Your pace is good and instruction is excellent. I look forward to further episodes.
This is just what i needed. I’ve been painting the walls of my train room with a real light blue ( a friend of mine gave it to me, so it was free) and i thought it was too light but after watching this video i can say it is almost the same blue that you started with. I can,t wait to start on the hills.
thanks, this is excellent and very informative.
Thanks Jay, I have an area on my layout that needs a backdrop but I have been putting it off for quite some time. I am now awaiting the rest of this series and am keen to have a go at painting a backdrop using your methods.
Great video. Lots of ideas from this. Thanks
Thanks for putting this video out there. It’s interesting to see Jay’s approach to the background as an artist. He deals in light and shadow in a different way than many modelers do, so we can learn a lot from his methods.
I like Jay’s style–of presentation and of painting. But perhaps there could be a companion piece or addendum that would give us parallel tips on modeling Western scenery. Even an occasional comment (“If you’re painting a Western hillside, you’ll want to make the base color bluer and suggest less rounded trees, like this:…”) would help a lot of us.
Glad I could be of service, thanks for all the feedback and have fun!
Very much looking forward to the continuation of this series. Hope MR & Jay will extend this topic into other regions and seasons- the West as mentioned, fall backgrounds, etc. It might even be worth doing an episode about basic tones and colors, light & shadow- “Painting 101”. Thanks!
Jay does a good job of teaching painting. He makes it seem fun.
