Thin Branch Series: Benchwork part 4 – Fascia

It would have been nice to see how you laid out and drilled the holes for the recessed switches. Can you tell us how this was done in order to maintain appropriate alignment with the holes that had already been drilled in the benchwork?

Excellent video. I especially like the fact you talked about the proper blade to use on my jigsaw for cutting a smooth edge on the facia. The idea of using a template is also an excellent idea.

Thank you!

Hello JD,

You can see how we drilled the holes and installed the toggle switches in the fascia in "Thin Branch Series: Switchmotor part 2 - wiring. We cover the entire process about halfway into the video.

Thanks for watching and best wishes on your projects!

David

David, In Thin Branch Benchwork part 4 - Fascia you briefly mention and show some “steel mounting pins” to make alignment of the staging section easier. What are these pins and where did you find them? Are they covered more in a future video part (I haven’t been thru the whole series yet)? They look like something I’ve been trying to find for free-mo modules but so far no luck at the big boxes, Ace or even Fastenal. Thought I would have to roll my own.

Hello Richard,

The pins are made are offered by C&L Finescale (www.finescale.org.uk). It is an English company, and the pins are item no. C1191. They are steel pattern maker’s pins, but C&L Finescale calls them “Baseboard alignment dowels.” We’ll show you how to install them in a future video. I believe I also showed how to use them in part 19 of the Virginian series videos (check Layouts/Project Railroads on this site).

Best wishes on your endeavors!

David

Thanks David for getting me pointed in the direction. Using the right search terms I found even more providers but they mainly seem to be overseas. I thought I had seen all of the Virginian series but apparently I missed #19 somehow. The bad news however was the price tag at $12-15 per joint plus shipping (my module sets can have 10+ joints and eventually there will be multiple sets) so I may still have to roll my own. But at least now I’ve got the proper terms and some pictures to again hit the woodworking tool stores, specialty fastener distributors etc and hopefully a clerk will make the connection this time.
Thanks again for your quick help.

Hi David, nice video. How did you do the corner braces and what is that piece under your left hand at 13:35 in the video?
