Thin Branch Series: Build a layout mock-up
David,
Are you going to post a layout PDF and let us know what turnouts you used for this extension.
Thanks,
Steve
I’d be interested in seeing the fully revised plan and a BOM as well.
Hello? Anyone reading these comments?
Great information.
David: I agree wholeheartedly with the concept of a full size mock-up of a railroad section. No matter how large the entire layout is, it can be broken into sections for this purpose. I would like to see model building kit manufacturers post on their websites, base layout of their various buildings which can be copied and resized as necessary, for scaling purposes, so that the modeler can have a source of building size and shape without having to actually purchase the entire kit, as it may turn out that that the building may not, for some reason, work in that particular area, but another might. Just a ‘hint’ for the manufacturers. Keep you the good work, the videos are very thorough and refreshing.
My scenery is still in the blue foam stage, so I built foam-core mock-ups of the major buildings to help visualize the completed scene-- not to mention make it whole lot more fun to operate in the meantime. Kudos to Walthers for thoughtfully giving the footprint of their kits in their catalog, but you have to estimate building dimensions from pictures for other manufacturers (Hint: doors are about 7 feet tall). It gives me–and visitors-- a better visualization of what it will all look like someday. I found that the Miranda’s Bananas kit I was planning to use for a produce warehouse barely fit, and overwhelmed the scene. So I’m using the Storage shed on pilings kit (used on the Thin Branch) instead. I also discovered some access issues for ground throw turnouts that wound up behind planned building sites. Much easier to fix at this point!
Great job on this segment, watched it awhile ago but came back to revisit it and add a question here. Is there a chance that MRV could do a series on layout design from concept to getting to this point, including basic track planning? I know I for one, could garner a lot of information from such a series.
