Thin Branch Series: Working with plaster rocks part 1

Where’s the video on creating the hills from polystyrene?

Thin Branch Working with Plaster Rocs 2 isn’t showing up in the Project Layouts search for Thin Branch videos. (4/26/13) I wonder why?

@David
What a great video, I really enjoy watching MR Video Plus!

I was wondering if you guys have ever experimented on “pre-colouring” the castings by blending some colour into the Hydrocal. If something should chip off later, the white hydrocal will not show if colour is mixed into it. I know some modelers do this, but is there a reason that you do not do that?

Hello Mark,

Plaster rocks part 2 is there now. It was missing a tag in the website software, keeping it from showing up.

Thanks for reporting the episode had gone missing, and enjoy the video!

David

I like the tip on using sand to hold the rock molds. Great little video clip at the end with the figure. -Mark

I also like the tip about using sand to level out the casting.
But I would like to know why David waits for the casting to dry before applying it. I have found that it hydrocal castings work much better if you apply them while the hydrocal is still in a stiff paste-like state. That way you can bend them around curves. Additionally it hides the joints between castings much better as you can work the soft casting into the dry one.
Pre-coloring sounds like a good idea too. Especially if the rock is on the foreground. what products can be used to color hydrocal?
